Joshua Fuentes Norikiyo earned three wins on Sunday.
CHADRON, Neb. — The San Francisco State wrestling team faced its toughest competition of the year on Sunday at the Chadron State Duals. The Gators beat the host Eagles, 24-16. SF State fell 27-14 to No. 8 Augustana and battled top-ranked St. Cloud State but eventually fell 26-16.
Wright got the Gators off on the right foot versus Chadron State, who is receiving votes in the latest NWCA Division II Coaches Poll. The 125-pound freshman upset No. 8 Quade Smith in overtime. The Gators fell behind 7-3 but Joshua Fuentes Norkikyo shifted the momentum back to the Gators at 149 lb. with a pin of Brandon Paredes. The Gators earned decisions in the next two bouts, and
Conrado Trevino-Oceguera earned a fall to put the Gators up 21-7.
Laith Gilmore also picked up an overtime win to seal the win.
Tony Margiotta gave the Gators an early lead with a fall at 133 lb. and Fuentes Norikiyo earned another win with a major decision over Connor Simonds at 149 lb. However, Augustana won the next five weight classes, two by pin. Heavyweight Emilio Franco Sandoval earned a major decision.
The Gators went up early versus the No. 1 ranked Huskies. Zach Wright bested Ashton Clark 6-2 at 125 lb., then Stefano McKinney followed at 133 lb. with an 11-5 win. McKinney used a couple of takedowns, three escapes, and scored a four-point near fall late in the third period. Fuentes Norikiyo earned his third win of the day with another major decision, and Trevino-Oceguera put the Gators up 16-15 with another pin at 174 lb. However, the Huskies held off the Gators by taking the final three bouts.
"What a great first, big road trip for our guys. This was our first opportunity of the year to see some of the best D2 wrestlers in the country, and to really test our guys. I'm happy with how we stepped up to the challenge," said Head Coach Jason Welch. "A couple kudos to the team that I'm stoked about are Conrado Trevino-Oceguera bumping up a weight class to 174 for our dual matches Sunday, and notably getting a pin versus a tough Chadron opponent. That' a game-changer in what we knew would be a hard-fought match. And then Zach Wright, coming out strong in his freshman campaign, and taking down the No. 8 wrestler in the country. Both of these guys stepped up to a challenge today, and propelled us to the team win."
