SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State softball team dropped its home opener, 2-1, to No. 14 Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon in the first game of a four-game series. Game two was halted due to darkness with the Otters leading 16-13 headed into the sixth inning.
- SF State moves to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in CCAA play. The Otters move to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in CCAA action.
- Sydney Jenkins went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Lehua DeLeon walked, scored a run, and stole her league-leading 18th base. The Gators entered play leading the nation with 59 total stolen bases.
GAME ONE
- A couple of walks led to Oli Perez's two-out base hit in the first inning that gave the Otters an early 1-0 lead.
- The Otters doubled the lead in the sixth. After two quick outs, Alohilani Apalla singled. Apalla was safe at second on a fielder's choice that should have been an out but shortstop Kai DeLeon dished the ball off rather than making the putout herself, and Apalla scored on Haley Clay's RBI single.
- SF State got the run back in the bottom of the sixth. Lehua DeLeon walked and stole second, then scored on Jenkins' two-out single to center.
- Kira Nilson singled in the seventh but the Otters got Brylynn Vallejos to groundout to end the game.
- Kaitlyn Maddux (3-5) pitched a complete game but came away with the loss. She allowed two runs on nine hit and struck out three.
- Cassie Gasper (5-3) allowed one run on six hits and struck out six in her outing for the Otters.
The Gators resume game two versus No. 14 Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at 11 a.m. That will be immediately followed by game three, then game four. The games will be broadcast on the CCAA Network with live stats available at sfstategators.com.
