Box Score IRVINE, Calif. — The San Francisco State softball team dropped its final game of the Concordia Kickoff Challenge, 10-8, to Western Oregon on Sunday at Orange County Great Park.
- SF State moves to 2-3 on the young season while the Wolves improve to 5-2.
- Brylynn Vallejos and Sydney Jenkins were named to the All-Tournament Team. Vallejos slashed .444/.429/.778 with five stolen bases, four runs, and three RBI. Jenkins hit .333 with three runs, an RBI, and was a perfect 7-for-7 on the basepaths.
- WOU outhit the Gators 18-7. Both teams drew five walks but the Wolves struck out just twice.
- Teya Vincent went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs, and an RBI.
- The Gators stole seven bases, including career-high four by Sydney Jenkins. The Gators are now 24-of-27 in stolen base attempts this season.
- The SF State defense defense turned a couple of double plays to neutralize WOU threats. Third baseman Lexi Holihan and shortstop Taya Vincent both speared line drives and threw across the diamond to Halle Nugent at first to double up the runner at first.
- The Wolves jumped on Gators starter Kaitlyn Maddux and took a 5-0 lead.
- SF State scratched out a couple of runs in the bottom half of the first thanks to a leadoff hit from Vallejos and a pair of sacrifice hits from Holihan and Nugent.
- In the second, Kai DeLeon singled home Vincent. Vallejos drove a sac fly to deep center that plated Marley Gonzales, who reached on a hit by pitch, and Lehua DeLeon tied the game with a single down the third base line.
- In the third, Sydney Jenkins walked and Vincent gave the Gators the lead with a single to left field.
- The Gators worked out of trouble in the fourth but gave up a pair of two-out runs in the fifth. The Wolves recorded back-to-back singles to begin the inning and a wild pitch moved both into scoring position. A walk loaded the bases but the Gators picked off the runner at second for the first out. A sacrifice moved the runner from first to second and leadoff batter Logan Carlos made the Gators pay with a two-run hit to right but was thrown out trying to get to third.
- SF State took the lead back in the sixth. Jenkins led off with a walk, then stole second and third. Vincent drew a walk to put runners on the corners and Gwen Helmer reached to load the bases. Kai DeLeon came through with a single back up the middle that plated Jenkins and Vincent to put the Gators back in front 8-7.
- WOU answered right back in the seventh. A leadoff single followed by a double tied the game, then Erica Soliz gave the Wolves the lead with an RBI single to right field and Maddie Doig plated an insurance run with her triple inside the third base bag.
- Holihan drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh and moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch but was stranded at third.
- Kaitlyn Maddux is still in search of her first win. After pitching two complete games, Maddux was knocked out after just two thirds of an inning on Sunday. She gave up five runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.
- Madeline Eshbach, who pitched a complete-game shutout in her first career start on Saturday, pitched in relief. She went six and a third innings and allowed five runs. She walked three and struck out one.
- Nicki Derrick started in the circle for the Wolves and surrendered five runs in the two innings of work with a walk and a strikeout.
- Jada Young pitched three innings of two-run ball in relief for WOU.
- Maddie Mayer picked up the win with two innings of work. She allowed a run on a hit and struck out four.
SF State heads to the 12th Annual Desert Stinger hosted by MSU Billings. The tournament will be played at Lincoln Park in Tucson, Arizona. SF State will face Western Washington, Regis, Saint Martin's, the host Yellowjackets, and No. 10 Concordia.
