SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State softball team dropped both games of its home doubleheader on Friday. The Gators fell to No. 11 Chico State 13-0 in five innings and fell late in the nightcap, 6-2.
- SF State slips to 12-12 overall and 7-7 in CCAA action while the first-place Wildcats improve to 20-4 and 12-2 in CCAA action.
- The Gators continue to pace NCAA Division II in stolen bases. The Gators executed a double steal in game two, bringing the team's total to a nation-best 78.
- SF State was blanked for just the second time this season and both of those losses have come to the hands of Top 25 programs.
- The Gators were run ruled for the first time this season and the first time dating back to February 29, 2020.
GAME ONE
- The Wildcats scratched out a run in the first, then scored a pair of runs in both the second and third innings, all four of which were unearned. Chico State added another run in the fourth then exploded for seven runs in the fifth to put the game well out of reach.
- Kaitlyn Maddux (5-8) lasted just two and two thirds innings. She allowed five runs but just one was earned.
- Madeline Eshbach was touched for eight earned runs in an inning and a third of relief.
- Taylor Kelly faced one batter but was credited with two thirds innings of work thanks to an inherited runner caught stealing.
- Brooke Larsen (12-1) continued her dominant season for the Wildcats. She struck out seve and won her CCAA-leading 12th win. She allowed just two hits and faced two over the minimum.
GAME TWO
- After both pitchers were perfect through three inning, the Gators threatened in the fourth but stranded a pair of runners at second and third. That proved costly as the Wildcats took the lead in the fifth on Lanie Bloomquist's RBI double to center.
- The Gators threatened again in the fifth but stranded two more on the basepaths. The Wildcats struck for five runs on five hits in the sixth, though three of those runs were unearned.
- SF State scored twice in the seventh on Brylynn Vallejos' RBI single and Dani Guerrera's bases-loaded walk and Sydney Jenkins represented the tying run at the plate but struck out on three pitches to end it.
- Kelly (1-1) pitched four perfect innings before allowing a run in the fifth. She was ultimately charged with six runs, just two earned.
- Katelyn Oldwin (6-2) struck out 10 and scattered four hits in the win for the Wildcats. She did not allow an earned run.
The two teams wrap up the four-game series on Saturday, March 12. The doubleheader is slated to begin at noon and will be broadcast on the CCAA Network with live stats available at sfstategators.com.
