CHICO — The San Francisco State baseball team split its series finale doubleheader with Chico State Sunday afternoon. In game one, the Gators contained a good Chico State offense but fell 4-2. Game two saw strong pitching from starter Tyler Franks and a late innings offense surge in an 8-4 seven-inning win.
- SF State sits at 8-12 and 3-9 in the CCAA while Chico State sits at 15-5 and 8-3 in the CCAA.
- Daniel Santos started every game this series and registered a double in every game.
- Sammy Gonzales hit a home run for the first time in his Gator career. Kody Gardner hit his first triple as a Gator as well.
- The win in game two gave Chico their first home loss of the season.
- The Gators did not register an error in game two.
After Chico State got a run on the board with a fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the first, the Gators returned the favor in the following inning.
Richie Rios put the ball in play to allow
Alec Smith to score. A double from Chico State's Crane gave the Wildcats the lead back as Chico plated two runners to go up 3-1.
Daniel Santos hit his fifth double of the series to bring in
Sammy Gonzales to cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth. A throwing error by the Gators in the bottom of the inning eventually led to another run from Chico.
Jack Reitsma came in to pitch in the seventh and held Chico scoreless the rest of the way while only allowing one hit. The Gators were unable to get runners into scoring position late in the game and could not complete the comeback.
Jakob Bouhuys hit a single to open the top of third inning and was able to score at home thanks to an error from the pitcher. Gonzales hit a first pitch home run to open the fifth inning and extend the lead to 2-0. With Santos on base, Gardner hit an RBI triple and was brought home by a Sac Fly by
Jo Bynum.
Tyler Franks, who had kept the Wildcats scoreless through five innings and limited any scoring opportunities, was chased out of the game after giving up a two-run homer.
Mario Vargas came in and retired the next three batters. The Gators put up four runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run RBI double from Santos to go into the bottom of the inning with a 8-2 lead. The Gators gave up a two-run triple with two outs but closed the book on the game with a pop-out to
Matthew Farren.
- Nathan Shinn started the game in game one, giving up one run off two hits in two innings.
- Austin Moberg came in to replaced Shinn in the third. He gave up three runs, two earned in the loss.
- Tyler Franks started game two and went five scoreless innings before giving up a run. He was credited with the win.
