SB | Vallejos Becomes All-Time Steals Leader, Gators Get Back in Win Column

Brylynn Vallejos' stolen base in game two gave sets a new program record with 89 career stolen bases.

HAYWARD, Calif. — The San Francisco State softball team got back in the win column with a doubleheader split versus Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Softball Field. The Gators dropped game one 7-0 but bounced back with an 11-3 five-inning win in game two.

  • With the two games, SF State moves to 17-26 overall and 8-18 in CCAA play while Cal State East Bay moves to 20-20 overall and 11-15 in conference action. The Pioneers are currently in sixth place while the Gators are in eighth place and battling for the sixth and final spot in the CCAA Tournament.
  • After recording just two hits in game one, the Gators' bats came alive for 16 hits in game two, which are the second most by the team this season.
  • In the first inning of game two, Brylynn Vallejos and Lehua DeLeon executed a double steal. With the steal, DeLeon has 31, which is second most in the CCAA. Vallejos now has 29 on the season and 89 for her career, which sets a new program career record.
  • The Gators snapped a five-game skid with the win over the Pioneers.

How They Scored
  • The Gators were limited to just two hits from Marley Gonzales and Kira Nilson. Lexi Holihan drew a walk and Teya Vincent was hit by a pitch.
  • CSUEB scored in the first on Annelise Garcia's RBI double, then added single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to make it 4-0. The Pioneers posted a three-run sixth inning.

  • Kaitlyn Maddux (7-16) was chased in the top of the fifth and allowed four runs on nine hits.
  • Madeline Eshbach was touched up for the three-run sixth, although she was charged with just one earned run.
  • Abby Greer (7-10), the Pioneers' all-time strikeout leader, struck out a pair and needed just 69 pitches for the complete-game win.

How They Scored
  • Thanks to Vallejos' and DeLeon's double steal, the Gators got out to a 2-0 lead. A throwing error on the play allowed both to score for an early 2-0 lead. Dani Guerrera added an RBI single to make it 3-0.
  • SF State blew the game open in the second inning with a six-run frame. All nine Gators came up to the plate and the first seven reached safely, beginning with Marley Gonzales' bunt single. Kai DeLeon was hit by a pitch, then Vallejos and Lehua DeLeon recorded back-to-back two-run doubles to make it 6-0. Sydney Jenkins drove in a run, Teya Vincent reloaded the bases with a single, Kira Nilson singled home a run, and Lexi Holihan capped off the scoring with a sac fly that plated Vincent.
  • The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom half of the second but the Gators added the run right back in the top of the third when Lehua DeLeon doubled home her sister, Kai DeLeon, from second.
  • Cal State East Bay cut the lead to 10-2 in the fourth but Jenkins' RBI double in the fifth helped maintain an eight-run lead.
  • Gators pitcher Taylor Kelly worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth to close the door.

  • Kelly (4-5) allowed three runs on six hits in the five-inning complete-game win.
  • Anamaria Beard (9-7) didn't make it out of the second inning for the Pioneers. She left trailing 4-0 and had two more runs charged to her.
  • Lex Palmon was charged with four runs in an inning and two thirds of relief. Savannah Barchus came out of the bullpen and allowed one run in the final two and a third innings.
