SAN FRANCISCO - Sierra Brill joined the Gators as an Assistant Coach for the cross country and track and field teams for the 2022-23 season, as announced by Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Tom Lyons.

"I'm thrilled to have Sierra begin her coaching career with us," stated Lyons. "In our conversations, she impressed me with a mature outlook toward the responsibilities of being a coach. Our athletes will benefit tremendously from her experience, leadership, and guidance."

Brill replaces David Urista who leaves after nine years with the department as both a coach and an athlete.

"I want to thank David Urista for all that he gave to the program. He was an athlete (2011-2013), then a coach (2015-2022) here. I appreciate his loyalty to SF State and dedication to providing such a great experience for all the athletes. I'm sure they would say the same thing."

Brill graduated from Cal Poly in 2022 with a degree in Art & Design and minor in Women, Gender & Queer Studies. She raced for the Mustangs from 2017-22, serving as a captain on the cross country and track and field teams. Brill was named the 2017 Big West Freshman of the Year in cross country and scored points for the Mustangs at the Big West Conference Championships from 2017-2021. Cal Poly Slo won the Big West Championship in Cross Country in 2018. Brill also posted top ten school times in the 5000 and 10000 meter during the track season.

"I'm excited to get to work with Coach Tom Lyons and especially the men and women on the cross country and track team. They seem like an enthusiastic group that's ready to work hard together to achieve their goals. I'm grateful to have the chance to help them get there, individually and as a team."

From July 2017 to August 2021, Brill also served as a Runner's Workshop Camp Counselor where she worked with high school runners to help improve their performance and build their self-confidence.

Brill earned high praise from her former college coach, Priscilla Bailey.

"Sierra is a big win for SF State," stated Bailey. "As a former Lowell HS and Cal Poly great, she brings with her the perfect blend of passion and experience. She will be an incredible recruiter, mentor, and coach. I could not think of anyone more perfectly positioned to make a positive impact on the program, and I cannot wait to see her in action."

A San Francisco native, Brill attended Lowell HS.
