A total of 935 student-athletes from across the 12 CCAA institutions collected CCAA All-Academic honors in 2021-22 for posting a 3.40 grade-point average or higher and earning a varsity letter in a conference-sponsored sport during the designated academic year.
The CCAA began handing out All-Academic honors in 2005-06, and the 935 selections are the most for any season, not including the COVID years. It eclipsed the 900 student-athletes to earn the honor in 2018-19.Â
"The student-athletes in the CCAA continue to impress us with their outstanding dedication to their personal, educational goals, all while being committed to their teams, their schools and their community," remarked CCAA Commissioner Mitch Cox. "To earn this honor requires great time-management skills, a focus on the future, and a strong work ethic. Congratulations to all of the 2021-22 CCAA All-Academic team members!"
Chico State led the way this year with 118 honorees, followed closely by San Francisco State with 109. Cal State San Marcos (100) also reached triple-digits. Sonoma State posted 92 selections, and Cal Poly Pomona followed with 90. Click here to see the complete list.Â
Eight of the 12 universities increased their total number of student-athletes from the 2018-19 squad. It was the last year before 2021-22, requiring student-athletes to compete in their sport to be eligible. Cal State LA saw the highest increase of honorees. The Golden Eagles placed 54 student-athletes on the team, an increase of .636 percent from 2018-19. San Francisco State (.535) and Cal Poly Pomona (.525) also saw significant upticks in their percentages, gaining over 50 percent apiece. Conference-winner, Chico State, increased its total by .297 percent.Â
The CCAA and NCAA Division II support the educational mission of college athletics by fostering a balanced and inclusive approach in which student-athletes learn and develop through their desired academic pursuits, civic engagement with their communities, and athletics competition, creating a life in the balance.
The award is designed to be a demonstration of the academic achievements of each of the CCAA's 12 conference constituents. It illustrates just one of the many ways student-athletes in the conference take advantage of the unique opportunity Division II provides to compete in the classroom, on the field, in their career, for their causes, and on their terms.
