SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team took an early late on
Gustavo Ferrari's second goal of the season but a late goal by visiting Hawai'i Hilo resulted in a 1-1 tie in the Gator's home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
- SF State moves to 1-2-2 on the young season while Hawai'i Hilo moves to 1-2-1.
- The two teams have only met once before. The Vulcans won that match back in 2014, 1-0 in overtime.
- Both teams attempted eight shots with the Vulcans holding a slight 5-4 shots on goal advantage.
- The Gators held a 4-3 corner kick advantage.
In the 18th minute, the Gators cleared a dangerous ball from the top of their own box. The ball cleared to Julio Gonzalez Ponce near the edge of the circle, who flicked behind to Ferrari, who was off to the races. With the entire UHH defense chasing him, Ferrari drew the goalkeeper to his left as Ferrari finished to the far right for the early Gators lead.
The Gators' lead held until the 70th minute when a defensive miscue proved costly. The Gators played the ball back to the keeper but failed to safely clear the ball. John Grover played the ball at the top of the box over to Aidan Santos on the right edge of the box, who chipped it in. Gators goalkeeper
Cooper Matthies leapt up but Gabriel Gallardo beat him point blank at the mouth of the goal.
Matthies (0-0-1) made his first career start in goal for the Gators. He made four saves and surrendered the goal in his debut. Christian Souza (1-1-1) made three saves for the Vulcans.
