Rivera Earns World Team Spot, Bigler Silver Medalist at Puerto Rican World Team Trials

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — Two San Francisco State wrestlers competed in Freestyle for spots on Puerto Rico's Under-23 World Team this past weekend in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The duo looked to secure a chance to represent the Puerto Rican flag this October at the Under-23 World Championships in Ponetevedra, Spain, and prepare themselves for the NCAA season ahead.

Jairo Rivera Vazquez, a redshirt freshman who will make his debut for the Golden Gators this year at 184 pounds, competed at 86kg for the trials. After securing two technical falls, Rivera fell to Penn State's Tony Negron and earned a silver medal at the trials. However, Negron has already been given the nod to represent Puerto Rico at 79kg, so Rivera's silver still earns him a berth to the World Championships at 86kg.

Bigler went 1-1 on the weekend, competing at 57kg. Bigler won his first match by technical fall before falling to Dylan Shawver, who was an NCAA Division I tournament qualifier for Rutgers this past season. Bigler is only in his first year at this age group, and is hopeful for the path ahead.

The Gators look ahead to Pontevedra, Spain, where Rivera will test his skills in Olympic wrestling against the best in the world. Learn more about the United World Wrestling (UWW) World Championships here.
