SAN FRANCISCO — A pair of second-half goals were the difference as the San Francisco State men's soccer team fell 2-0 to visiting No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
- The Gators slip to 3-8-2 overall and to 1-5-1 in CCAA action. With four CCAA matches remaining, they now find themselves six points out of playoff contention. The nationally-ranked Broncos improve to 8-1-4 overall and stand in third place in the CCAA with 14 points (4-1-2).
- SF State suffered its sixth shutout of the season.
- Cal Poly Pomona outshot the Gators 12-5, including 8-2 on goal.
- CPP also held a 4-1 corner kick advantage.
SF State battled in the first half, including three nice saves from Fernando Escobedo Guzman, one of which came in the opening minute. The Gators played to a scoreless half and added another twenty minutes of scoreless soccer. Escobedo Guzman made another stop in the 65th minute but a Gators foul in the box in the 66th minute set up the first of two Broncos penalty kicks. Jasper Winslow finished to his left to make it 1-0, then the Gators were whistled for another foul in the box in the 68th minute and Winslow added his second goal of the day. SF State nearly answered with a goal in the 69th minute but Julio Gonzalez Ponce's shot hit the crossbar.
Escobedo Guzman (2-5) made six saves and guessed correctly on both PK but was unable to come up with the stops. CJ Walker tended net for CPP and made a pair of saves en route to the win.
