SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team dropped its final match of the 2023 season, a 4-2 loss to visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at Cox Stadium.
- The Gators finish the season 3-11-3 and 1-8-2 overall. No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay moves to 11-3-4 overall and captures the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CCAA Tournament with 23 points (7-2-2).
- Issay Bravo and Georgi Stoyanov both scored their second goals of the season for the Gators. Five different Gators have scored two or more goals this season.
- Julio Gonzales Ponce had his sixth assist of the season. He finishes his senior campaign with four goals and six assists for 14 points, the latter two which both lead the team.
- Cal State Monterey Bay outshot the Gators 14-13 with a slight 11-8 shot on goal advantage.
- The Gators held a 7-4 corner kick advantage.
The Otters grabbed the lead in the opening minute. Off of a throw-in, the Gators failed to clear the ball and Janos Kommerling took the ball and passed to the right side, where Mason Ward finished with a left-footed shot to the far post. Bravo tied it just before halftime, in the 43rd minute, when he followed a blocked shot by Johan Duenas.
The Otters regained the lead in the 48th minute on a penalty kick. Roberto Banegas went to his right for the score and Escobedo Guzman dove to his right. Bravo had another opportunity in the 60th minute when he headed a cross from Gonzales Ponce but his shot was saved.
SF State had two more opportunities in the 68th and 69th minutes.
Georgi Stoyanov had a shot in the box saved, as did Gonzales Ponce. The ensuing corner kick resulted in a header by
Adrian Vasquez that was also saved.
The game got away from the Gators late. The Otters scored off of a free kick in the 75th minute. Francisco Ponce took a free kick from outside the left side of the box that was punched out by Escobedo Guzman but Alexis Sanchez was at the top of the box for the putback. In the 82nd minute, Luis Escalante connected with Kane Ritchie to make it 4-1.
SF State got a goal back in the 85th minute when Gonzales Ponce connected with Stoyanov in front of the goal mouth.
Fernando Escobedo Guzman (2-8-1) made a career-high seven saves in the loss. Otters goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff made six saves and allowed one goal in nearly 80 minutes of action. Matthias Milton allowed one goal in the final 10 minutes of action.
