Kyle Botelho scored a major decision on Friday at Colorado Mesa.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The San Francisco State wrestling team dropped a pair of RMAC duals on Friday inside Brownson Arena. The Gators fell 23-21 to No. 22 Western Colorado and fell 30-10 to host Colorado Mesa.
Versus No. 22 Western Colorado, the Gators went up 12-0 early after the Mountaineers forfeited at 125 and 133 lb. The Gators didn't score again until the last three bouts but all were decisions and the Gators were unable to score any extra points. Kweli Hernandez-Maitre had a pair of takedowns and a four-point near fall in a 12-9 victory at 184 lb. At 197 lb., Laith Gilmore won 11-8 thanks to three takedowns and a pair of escapes. In the heavyweight bout, Emilio Franco Sandoval tied things 1-1 with a third-period escape, then scored a takedwon for the overtime victory.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 12-0 lead through the first three weight classes. Lawrence Saenz, who is ranked No. 7 at 149 lb. by theopenmat.com, moved to 2-1 on the season with a narrow 5-4 decision thanks to a third-period takedown. Kyle Botelho was victorious at 165 lb. with the team's only major decision of the day, a 19-6 victory. At 174 lb., Gage Mettler earned a third-period takedown to win another close bout, 3-2.
Jairo Rivera Vazquez wrestled an extra countable match at 197 lb. and used a pair of takedowns for a 6-3 victory.
