COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The San Francisco State baseball team opened up the 2023 season with a 7-5 win over University of Colorado, Colorado Spring Friday afternoon.
- The Gators opened their season in 2022 hosting UCCS and won their season opener that year as well. SF State has won its season opener every year since 2019.
- SF State were out hit 13-9 but held the advantage in doubles (4-3) and left fewer runners on base (Seven compared to the Mountain Lions' 11)
- Matt Sugden and Nick Upstill both went 2-for-4 at the plate and both hit a single and a double.
- Gavin Haimovitz had a team high three RBIs.
- SF State batters only struck out three times.
- Kody Gardner, who was All-CCAA Honorable Mention at DH last season, made his first career start at first base.
After getting a pair of lead-off batters on base to open the game,
Nick Upstill singled to center field to bring
Sammy Gonzales home. Colorado Springs threatened in the bottom of the second with a runner on third but a six-four-three double played ended the inning and stranded the runner.
In the top of the fourth with bases loaded and no outs,
Gavin Haimovitz hit a base clearing double to deep left center to put the Gators up 4-0. After a pitching change from the Mountain Lions, the Gators got a pair of RBI walks to increase the lead to six.
Mountain Lions scratched home plate once in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to cut the Gators' lead to 6-2. Gonzales hit into a double play with no outs in the top of the sixth, allowing the runner at third to score. The Gators faced some adversity in the bottom of the sixth when a double brought in two UCCS runners with two outs but a pop fly ended the inning.
Up 7-4 in the ninth, the lead-off batter singled and would make his way around the bases but the Gators were able to keep the bases clear of Mountain Lions and get three straight outs.
- Jordyn Eglite opened the season as the Friday starter, the same role he played a season ago. The senior pitched 4.2 innings, threw five strikouts, gave up six hits, two runs and two walks. He now has 145 career strikeouts, good for sixth all-time and three away from moving into fifth.
- Ethan Remmers earned his first career win in relief of Eglite, throwing for 1.1 innings.
- Mario Vargas and Brody Eglite both pitched scoreless innings for the Gators.
