SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team split its doubleheader with Cal State East Bay Saturday at Maloney Field. The Gators scored in chunk innings in game one to claim a 8-3 victory. In game two, the Gators fell behind early and could not make up the deficit, dropping a 14-2 game.
- The Gators sit at 9-2 and 2-1 in the CCAA while the Pioneers sit at 7-6 and 1-2 in conference.
- The loss snappd an eight game win streak.
- The Gators continued to add to the number of triples hit on the season, with Nick Upstill hitting one in the first game and Michael Cunningham hitting a pair in the same game as well.
- SF State had nine left on base in game two while registering nine hits during the game.
Game 1
After East Bay put up a pair of runs in the top of the second, the Gators used a mix of patience at the plate and good at bats to score three runs in the bottom of the inning. With bases loaded,
Antonio Nanez hit an RBI single to right to plate the first runner home.
Sammy Gonzales and
Daniel Santos drew back-to-back RBI walks to give the Gators a 3-2 lead.
The bats were sizzling in fifth as the Gators scored four runs off three hits. Upstill his a triple to come within 90 feet of the plate. Cunningham followed up with a triple of his own to score Upstill. Gardner singled to right field to bring Cunningham in and
Gavin Haimovitz hit another extra base hit for the Gators, doubling down the left field line to bring Gardner home.
Derek Laferierre capped off the scoring with an RBI single to bring the lead to 7-2.
East Bay hit a lead-off triple in the top of sixth and scored on the next at bat to cut the lead to 7-3.
AJ Schrader hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to take back the five-run lead. The Gators retired the next six Pioneer batters faced to close the game.
- Gary Grosjean earned his first win of the season. Through seven innings, he tossed seven strikeouts while giving up five hits, three runs and one walk.
- Mickey Radanovich and Ethan Remmers both pitched an inning in relief. Each faced the minimum three batters with neither giving up hits.
- Anthony Perez drew the loss.
Game 2
The Pioneers put up four-spots in the third and fourth innings, creating a big hole for the Gators to come back from.
AJ Schrader hit an RBI single to give the Gators their first run of the day in the bottom of the fourth. East Bay's offense continued to score runs, scoring two in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Matt Sugden doubled down the left field line to plate Schrader in the bottom of the sixth but the deficit was too much to overcome.
- Tyler Franks drew the loss, giving up eight runs with seven of them being earned. He also tossed six strikeouts.
- Danny Peters, Jacob Crain and Gabrial Lopez and saw action in relief.
- Gabe Tanner earned a complete game with for East Bay, fanning eight strikeouts in the process.
