ASHLAND, Ore. — The San Francisco State wrestling team dropped a pair of duals, 32-16 to Corban and 25-13 to host Southern Oregon, on Saturday at Riehm Arena.
Falls plagued the Gators versus Corban. The Gators fell behind after
Zach Wright was pinned at 125 pounds.
Tony Margiotta gave the Gators a brief lead with his first of two wins on the day, an 8-7 win over Bo Davis at 133 pounds. The Gators suffered another pin at 141 pounds but the Gators pulled to within a point, 12-11, thanks to major decisions from
Joshua Fuentes Norikiyo and
Kyle Botelho. Another fall at 165 pounds by David Rubio, the No. 4 ranked wrestler in NAIA, kept the Warriors ahead 18-11.
Gage Mettler scored a tech fall, 20-2, that pulled the Gators to within two but another Corban pin at 184 pounds proved costly. The Warriors closed out the meeting with a pair of major decisions.
The Gators jumped out to an 13-6 lead through six weight classes but the Gators' lineup faded in the heavier weights. Wright bounced back with a major decision, 13-4, and Wright squeezed out a 7-5 decision for his second win of the day. The Raiders came to within 7-6 with a pair of decisions, including a rare loss for Fuentes Norikiyo, who was bested 9-5 by Aaron Gandara, the No. 6 ranked wrestler in NAIA at 149 pounds. Botelho and Taam both scored decisions to keep SF State up 13-6. Mettler battled but dropped a 4-3 decision to Alex Hernandez, the No. 19 ranked wreslter in NAIA at 174 pounds. The host Raiders took the lead with a fall at 184 pounds, then secured the win a major decision by former Gator Andrew Herrera, and another fall in the heavyweight bout.
SF State finishes out the regular season on Friday, February 10 at Menlo. Then the Gators will shift their focus to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals on Saturday, February 25 at the Chicoine Center in Chadron, Nebraska.
