SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team took game one 6-4 of a four game series with Cal Poly Pomona at Maloney Field. Nathan Shinn pitched against Caleb Reyes, the CCAA leader in ERA, and tossed a career high 11 strikeouts in the win.
- The Gators improve to 25-16 overall and 18-15 in CCAA action while the Broncos fall to to 24-18 and 16-16 in the conference. Both teams were listed as under consideration in the West Region in the first regional rankings.
- With the win, the Gators surpass their win total in 2018 of 24 wins and record the most wins since at least 2006.
- Matt Sugden had a game high three RBIs after going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run.
- Justin Clark hit his 13th double of the season, keeping him in the top ten in the conference in that category.
- The Broncos had three errors on the day.
After the Broncos jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Gators got a run back when
Sammy Gonzales hit a leadoff single, made his way to third off a wild pitch and throwing error and was plated home thanks to a
Daniel Santos sac fly. With runners on the corners in the second,
Michael Cunningham hit a single up the middle to tie the game up. An error loaded the bases with one outs, but Pomona struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Kody Gardner recorded his 31st RBI of the season to bring in
Justin Clark and take the lead for the Gators in the third inning. With runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth, Sugden launched a ball over left field on a 1-0 count to give the Gators some need insurance runs. A pinch hitter home run cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the ninth, but the Gators held strong and got two more outs to end the inning.
- Nathan Shinn (5-3) matched his career high with seven innings of work and tossed 120 pitches, one more than his previous career high. 11 strikeouts is the most any conference player has thrown this season.
- Andrew Silva gave the Gators two innings in relief to earn his fourth save of the season.
- Caleb Reyes (6-2) drew only his second loss of the season. The six runs giving up with five earned was the most the Broncos' ace has given up all season.
