SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State baseball team made things interesting in the ninth inning but took care of business and beat Cal State San Marcos 8-6 in the series opener at Mahoney Field. The Cougars made it a two-run game with no outs but the Gators closed out the ninth and retired the next three batters.
- The Gators improve to 17-11 and 10-10 in the CCAA, returning to .500 in conference for the first time since March 3. The Cougars fall to 10-15 and 4-11 in the CCAA
- Michael Cunningham went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored.
- Justin Clark went 3-for-5 with a team high three RBIs.
- Nick Upstill hit his sixth triple of the season, the third most in a single season in school history. Prior to the start of the series, no other player in the NCAA has hit more than six triples this season.
A two-run homer gave the Cougars the early lead in the top of the second. The Gators plated three in the third to take their first lead of the day. Upstill's triple brought
Sammy Gonzales home. Cunningham hit an RBI single in the following at bat and a ball sliced down the left field line by Clark allowed Cunningham to score.
An RBI single in the top of the fifth tied the game at 3-3.
Gavin Haimovitz hit a sac fly in the bottom of the inning to break the tie and a throwing error by the right fielder allowed another run to score. SF State put another three spot on the board in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Cunningham hit a double down the left field line to score
Daniel Santos from third.
Justin Clark hit a single deep into center field to clear the bases and give the Gators a 8-3 lead.
San Marcos loaded the bases with no outs. An RBI walk scored a runner before
Andrew Silva stepped on the mound in relief. The Cougars hit a two-run RBI single in the first at bat and moved the runners to second and third with a sac bunt. Silva induced a pair of pop-ups to end the rally.
- Mickey Radanovich started and pitched two innings, giving up two hits, a walk and two runs.
- Nathan Shinn went six innings and improved his record to 4-2 on the season. He tossed six strikeouts while giving up six hits, four runs and a walk.
- Andrew Silva earned his second save of the season, giving up a hit to the first batter faced before retiring the next three.
- Conner Gleissner took the loss for the Cougars, falling to 1-4.
The Gators will play a doubleheader with Cal State San Marcos Friday, April 7. Game one will start at noon pending field conditions from forecasted morning rain. Live stats will be available through
