SAN FRANCISCO - Five San Francisco State baseball players - Nick Upstill, Daniel Santos, Matt Sugden, Sammy Gonzales and Nathan Shinn - have been named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Baseball Team.

The 2023 Academic All-District® Baseball Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA — for each gender.

Nick Upstill earned All-CCAA First Team in the outfield after leading the Gators with a .367 batting average, 69 hits and 36 runs. His nine triples leads the NCAA this season and he holds the record for most triples in school history. The Huntington Beach native holds a 3.88 GPA and will graduate in a couple weeks with a degree in Psychology.

Daniel Santos was named to the All-CCAA Second Team at second base. Playing in all but one game this season, he slashed .323/.418/.394. He was second on the team in hits (61) with nine doubles and three home runs. The sophomore from Hacienda Heights is majoring in Criminal Justice and boasts a 3.78 GPA.

Matt Sugden garnished All-CCAA Honorable Mention at catcher. The Pleasanton native slashed .328/.436/.390 and had 43 hits that included eight doubles, a triple and four home runs. An Applied Mathematics major, Sugden holds a 3.66 GPA.

Sammy Gonzales, who earned this honor a season ago as well, also earned a spot on the All-CCAA team as an Honorable Mention outfielder. Gonzales had 47 hits that included eight doubles and five triples. He led the team in stolen bases (nine) hit by pitches (12) and was second in runs (32). The Winters native will graduate in a couple weeks with a degree in Business Management and a 3.93 GPA.

Just a sophomore, Nathan Shinn has already become one of the top pitchers for the Gators and earned All-CCAA Honorable Mention this season. Shinn posted a 6-4 record with a save and an ERA of 4.57. His 78 strikeouts on the season led the team and was the fifth most thrown in a single season. The Pleasanton native is majoring in Business Management and holds a 3.88 GPA.

Academic All‐District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All‐America® ballot. First‐, second and third‐team Academic All‐America® honorees will be announced June 7.

The Division II CSC Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.
