SAN FRANCISCO - Nine athletes from the men and women's track & field and cross country teams were named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Track & Field and Cross Country Team, as selected by College Sports Communicators. On the men's side,
Joshua Abrenica,
Erik Carlson,
Gary Valle and
Bailey Williams represented the Gators.
Mattie Cecilio,
Amy Christensen,
Viviann Luong,
Dami Oyatayo and
Olivia Renfro were selected on the women's side.
Joshua Abrenica helped the Gators win their first meet of the season at the Otter Invitational with a third place finish. The sophomore from Temecula is majoring in Computer Science.
Erik Carlson was named the team's Golden Gator during the track season and ran a personal best time in the 10000m at the CCAA Championship in his final race of his career. Outside of running, Carlson has served as a play-by-play broadcaster for several of the SF State broadcasts. A native of San Ramon, Carlson holds a degree in Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts.
Gary Valle ran in all but one meet between the track and cross country seasons. He recently represented the Gators at the CCAA Track & Field Championships and ran the 5000m. The La Puente native is majoring in Biology.
Bailey Williams paced the Gators during the Cross Country season. His 42nd place finish at NCAA Western Regionals helped the Gators place 11th. Williams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for his performance at Regionals. The senior from Santa Rosa recently graduated with a degree in Psychology.
Mattie Cecilio capped off a successful first year with the Gators with an appearance at NCAA Outdoor Championships. The transfer from UC San Diego placed second at CCAA Championships in the Triple Jump and holds the second best triple jump mark in school history with a 12.27m jump. She earned All-West Region Honors for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The native from San Jose is currently earning her MBA.
Amy Christensen broke the school Pole Vault record a number of times this part season with her best performance at the CCAA Championships. She won after clearing 3.89m, only .07 away from breaking the meet record. Like Cecilio, she earned All-West Region Honors for both Indoor and Outdoor seasons. Christensen is majoring in Kinesiology.
Viviann Luong continued to improve in the hurdles throughout the season, running personal best times in the 100 and 400m hurdles. She ran three events at CCAA Championships, the 100m hurdle, 400m hurdle and 4x400 relay. Luong hails from Santa Clara and is majoring in Asian American Studies.
Dami Oyatayo wrapped up her track career recently at the CCAA Championships. She reached the finals in the 400m and placed seventh to earn points for the Gators. A native of Tarzana, Oyatayo graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice.
Olivia Renfro was named the Elite 13 winner at the CCAA Cross Country Championships. The award is given to the athlete with the high GPA at the Championship. Renfro is also involved with the athlete community and serves on the SAAC Exec Board. A Fresno native, Renfro graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies.
The 2023 Academic All-District® Track & Field and Cross Country Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA — for each gender.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 28. The Division II and III CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs.
