Gage Mettler scored one of three major decisions that helped lead the Gators to victory.
COSTA MESA, Calif. — The San Francisco State wrestling team spoiled Vanguard's final home dual on Thursday evening inside Seymour Sanctuary with a 33-10 win.
SF State has won back-to-back duals and improves to 4-5 on the year while Vanguard falls to 2-5.
The Gators went up and never trailed after a forfeit at 125 lb. At 133 lb., Tony Margiotta began the second period with an escape that stood as the lone point in the dual and extended the lead to 9-0. With Sean Yamasaki a late scratch, Michael McGruder stepped in at 141 lb. but fell by major decision to make it 9-4. Then, at 149 lb., Zane Stoddard earned a decision to extend the lead to 12-4. The Gators rattled off three consecutive major decisions by Basil Othman, Kyle Botelho, and Gage Mettler to take a commanding 24-4 victory. At 184 lb., Kweli Hernandez-Maitre earned the squad's third shutout of the night with a narrow 2-0 win. SF State conceded the 197 lb. bout and heavyweight Emilio Franco Sandoval finished things off with another strong performance, earning the pin in 3:56.
"I'm really happy with the fire that the guys displayed tonight, feel like we really came out ready to rock," said Head Coach Jason Welch. "Happy to bring home the W in Orange County!"
The Gators will head to British Columbia for their next two duals on January 20. Simon Fraser will host and the Gators will also face Adams State.
