Heavyweight Emilio Franco Sandoval's win secured the Gators a 19-18 victory over FHSU.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State wrestling team hosted a pair of teams receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division II NWCA Coaches Poll. The Gators fell 26-15 to Colorado Mines but left the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza on a winning note with a 19-18 tiebreaker victory over Fort Hays State.

The Gators have won three of their last four duals and move to 3-5 on the season. During the second dual, the Gators also took a moment to honor their five new alumni in attendance – Callum Bisping, Joshua Fuentes Norikiyo, Stefano McKinney, Marco Ruffinelli, and Josh Tolentino. Additionally, Aaron Galef was unable to attend.

SF State trailed 9-0 early versus the Tigers before earning three straight decisions to tie things 9-9 through five bouts. Kyle Botelho gave the Gators a 12-9 lead with another decision, and Kweli Hernandez-Maitre scored a takedown in overtime to keep the Gators ahead, 15-13, with two bouts remaining but SF State fell behind 18-15 after Laith Gilmore suffered a tech fall to No. 6 Tereus Henry at 197 lb. With the dual on the line, heavyweight Emilio Franco Sandoval secured the victory with a crucial takedown that secured a 5-0 bout victory. That tied the dual at 18-18 but, more importantly, gave the Gators their sixth win of the dual, breaking the tie for an extra point and the win.

Versus Colorado Mines, the Gators fell behind 20-0 in their first four bouts before Basil Othman got the Gators on the board with a tech fall at 157 lb. Botelho followed with a decision and Gilmore and Franco Sandoval finished the dual on a strong note with a major decision and a decision, respectively.
