At 197 lb., Steven Karas scored one of three Gators upsets with his decision over No. 12 Gabe Carrranza.
SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State wrestling team fell 29-14 to nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa in the Gators' home opener on Saturday afternoon inside the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza.
The Mavericks are ranked No. 12 in the preseason NWCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll while the Gators are receiving votes. Colorado Mesa also bested Menlo 25-15 earlier in the day.
The match was tied 4-4 after Johnny Lopez earned a major decision over No. 9 Oran Huff. However, extra points in the 141, 149, and 157-pound bouts allowed the Mavericks to take a commanding 21-4 lead. The Gators' Kyle Botelho, ranked No. 12 in the country at 165 lb., scored a major decision, and Kydyn Lima followed with an upset over No. 6 Gus Dalton, though Dalton scored late to avoid consecutive major decisions. The Gators trailed 21-11 and still had a chance to win the match but the Mavericks sent three more ranked wrestlers to the mat. That didn't stop Steven Karas from registering another upset for SF State at 197 lb. with his narrow 4-1 decision over No. 12 Gabe Carranza.
