SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State wrestling team (2-3) dropped a non-conference dual to MSU Moorhead (3-1), 31-9 on Friday at the Annual Lars Jensen Dual Meet.
The Gators, who are receiving votes in the NWCA Coaching Poll, were led by No. 12 Kyle Botelho, Steven Karas and Zane Stoddard who each won their respective bouts.
MSUM, who defeated Vanguard, 37-5 earlier in the day, came out to a 12-0 lead after Clayson Mele won by fall (2:32) in 125 lb. and by forfeit in 133 lb.. Andre Dargani fell, 10-2 in 141 lb. as the visitors now lead 16-0. Sean Yamasaki battled early but lost by fall (3:23) in 149 lb.. Stoddard stormed out to a 3-0 lead behind an early takedown in the first period, and swiftly closed out the 13-6 decision to put the Gators on the board in 157 lb..
No. 12 Botelho, who was honored with the Lars Jensen Memorial Scholarship prior to his bout, defeated Jacob Thomas in 165 lb., 4-0 in a thriller, which was headlined by a takedown in the closing seconds. Kydyn Lima fell in his 174 lb. Clash, giving the Dragons a 25-6. Kweli Hernandez-Maitre dropped an 11-7 decision in 184 lb., but Karas got his third victory of the season with a 14-12 decision in 197 lb.. Laith Gilmore wrapped things up in 285 lb., narrowly falling, 4-1.
