Pueblo, Colo. — The San Francisco State wrestling team won both of its RMAC duals on Saturday afternoon at Massari Arena. The Gators bested New Mexico Highlands 34-8 and topped host CSU Pueblo, 29-8.
The Gators have now won six straight duals and post their first winning record in duals since the 2017-18 season. Versus New Mexico Highlands, the Gators won the first five bouts and led 22-0 before the Cowboys got on the board at 165 lb. At 174 lb., Gage Mettler sealed the victory with a pin at 174 lb. and needed just 56 seconds to take down Thomas Tolbert. Kweli Hernandez-Maitre (184 lb.) and Emilio Franco Sandoval (285 lb.) both earned decisions to finish out the dual.
Versus host CSU Pueblo, the Gators won the first seven duals and never left a doubt.
Johnny Lopez had his second pin of the day at 141 lb. and did so in under two minutes in both duals. The midyear transfer is now 6-0 for the Gators, including 3-0 in duals. Five of his wins have been by fall, including all three dual victories. The Thunderwolves recorded wins at 184 and 197 lb. but Franco Sandoval earned his second decision of the day. He won both of his decisions 2-0 and scored in both with an escape and a point for riding time.
"It feels really good to end the season on a six-match win streak," said Head Coach Jason Welch. "I feel like we've been diligently building up to this point, and are peaking at the right time. Hoping to continue the momentum through Regionals!"
The Gators have some time off to rest and practice before heading back to Pueblo for the NCAA Division II Super Regional VI on Saturday, March 2.
