SAN FRANCISCO — David Eichhorn pitched a complete-game for San Francisco State and got enough run support from the offense to beat #11 Cal State San Bernardino 4-1 to clinch the series and make a strong early season statement.
- SF State improves to 9-5 and 3-1 in the conference while San Bernardino falls to 8-6 and 1-3 in the CCAA. The Coyotes made an appearance in the World Series last season.
- Eichhorn got help from his defense that turned a pair of double plays and caught a runner trying to steal second.
- The nine-inning complete-game was the first one recorded since Jack Higgins pitched a complete-game shut-out over Cal State San Marcos on February 21, 2020.
- The Gators had nine hits on the day with Derek Laferriere and Antonio Nanez going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 respectively.
- Both Laferriere and Jacob French hit doubles, with Laferriere's double leading to two RBIs.
- The Gators limited any chance of the Coyotes offense getting anything going as San Bernardino finished the day with five hits, all singles.
Laferriere hit a lead-off single in the second, stole second base and arrived home safely off a single to right field from Nanez. With two outs in the third,
Daniel Santos singled,
Justin Johnson walked and both moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Laferriere found space in right center and both players scored to bring the lead up to 3-0.
The Gators ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth when the Coyotes hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. SF State turned a double play and left the lead-off runner on third with two outs. The Gators looked to close out the innings spotless, but a botched throw to first from second allowed the runner to score. SF State added an insurance run in the sixth when
Nicholas Cook took his first at bat of the game and sent the first pitch he saw to right field for an RBI single. The Cotoyes only had one hit the rest of the way.
- David Eichhorn (3-0) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, retiring the first 12 batters faced. His final stat line through nine was five hits, one walk, eight strikeouts and one unearned run.
- Luke Hempel (2-1) took his first loss of the season, striking out seven but also giving up three runs and seven hits.
The Gators play their first conference road series at Chico State. The first of four games starts at 6 p.m. on March 1. Live stats will be available through
