TUCSON, Ariz. — The San Francisco State softball team opened the 2024 Cactus Classic with a 4-3 win over Minnesota State Moorhead and dropped their second game of the day, 5-4, to Davis & Elkins.
- SF State moves to 2-4 on the young season. Minnesota State Moorhead sufferd its first loss to fall to 4-1 while Davis & Elkins moved to 5-1.
- The Dragons are picked to finish sixth in the NSIC. Davis & Elkins is picked to finish third in the Mountain East after coming off a historic 2023 campaign that saw the Senators finish earn a bid to the NCAA Division II Regional for the first time in school history.
- SF State notched nine hits in each game and outhit both of their opponents.
- Kai DeLeon went 3-for-4 versus MSUM and 1-for-3 versus Davis & Elkins to go 4-for-7. She is batting at team-leading .474.
- Daniella Guerrera went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI versus MSUM.
- Marley Gonzales, Marissa Jordan, and Phoebe Schultz all recorded two-hit games versus Davis & Elkins.
- The Gators turned two double plays vs. MSUM. Lexi Holihan stepped on the bag at third and threw across to get the first two outs of the fourth. In the sixth, DeLeon tagged the runner and threw over to first to get the first two outs of that inning.
vs. Minnesota State Moorhead
- In the top of the second inning, Sam Centeno gave MSUM an early lead with her two-out homer down the left field line. The Gators argued that the ball was actually foul but the call stood.
- SF State grabbed the lead for good with a three-run third inning. Mia Misasi scorched a ball off the third baseman and DeLeon legged out an infield single to put runners at first and second. The pair moved up on Gonzales' sac bunt, then Guerrera drove the pair home with a line drive single to center field. Emily Madrigal came in to run for Guerrera and stole second, then avoided the tag at third for another stolen base. Holihan capped off the inning with a single through the left side to make it a 3-1 Gators lead.
- In the fourth, DeLeon doubled home Kira Nilson, who led off with a single to left field, to make it 4-1.
- The Dragons threatened in the seventh when they scored a pair of runs off of reliever Taylor Kelly.
- Mari Takeda Bajan (2-1) tossed six innings and then reentered to record the final out. She needed just 92 pitches and allowed just two hits and struck out three.
- Azalya Lopez (2-1) threw 123 pitches and reached 100 by the fifth inning. She gave up nine hits and four runs, and struck out four.
vs. Davis & Elkins
- The Senators took the lead in the second inning with an unearned run but Kaitlyn Maddux got Alys Hanes swinging to leave the bases loaded and end the threat, then struck out the side in the third.
- In the fourth inning, DeLeon and Gonzales led off with back-to-back infield singles. After DeLeon stole third, the Gators tied the game on Guerrera's sacrifice fly to right field.
- Nilson roped a double down the left field line to lead off the fifth, then stole third base and scored on pefect squeeze play when Schultz laid down a bunt to the pitcher. Jordan smacked a two-out double and Misasi singled through the left side to make it 3-1.
- Davis & Elkins got a run back in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, then the Gators got the run right back in the seventh with a two-out rally. After back-to-back 1-6-3 outs, Schultz got a ball out of the infield with a single through the left side, then Jordan drove Schultz home with another two-out double.
- However, the lead didn't hold up for the Gators. Half of the Senators' hits came in the seventh inning as they mounted a comeback walk-off with four singles and a walk.
- Kaitlyn Maddux went six and a third innings. She allowed six hit and four runs, three of which were earned. She struck out seven and walked a pair.
- Elise Roy (0-3) was charged with the loss. She gave up a run, two hits, and a walk.
- Senators starter Vanessa Hunt went four and two thirds innings and ended up with a no-decision. So did Dawn Morris, who gave up a run and two hits in two innings. Sammie Jarvis (3-0) gave up a hit and recorded one out but was the pitcher of record.
The Cactus Classic continues on Friday, February 9. Due to rain, the games have again been moved back to 1 and 3 p.m. In the 1 p.m. game, the Gators will be the visiting team versus Minnesota State Moorhead, then will move fields to face Adams State at 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the
