SB | Gators Walk Off in Eight, Sweep Friday Doubleheader

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State softball team finally played its first home games of the season and it was worth the wait. SF State swept Friday's doubleheader in exciting fashion as Lexi Holihan walked it off for the Golden Gators in the eighth inning in game one for a 5-4 victory. The Gators then took game two, 2-1.

  • SF State moves to 9-13 overall and is 6-8 in CCAA play thus far. The Lumberjacks slip to 12-10 overall and to 5-5 in CCAA action.
  • The Gators have won all three extra-innings games this season, and those three games have all come over the last five games. Eight of the Gators' nine wins have been one-run ballgames, and they are now 8-4 in one-run ballgames.
  • The Gators tallied 16 hits. Marley Gonzales, Mia Misasi, and Makenzie Stenson all had two-hit games in game one. Kai DeLeon and Daniella Guerrera each had a pair of hits in game two and accounted for four of the team's five hits. DeLeon and Gonzales both had a three-hit day.
  • Kai DeLeon recorded a hit in both games and now has a team-high 22. She has reached safely in 21 of the Gators' 22 games this season. She also scored a run in each game and has scored a run in 17 games this season.
  • Mari Takeda Bajan, who was coming off CCAA Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing an 11-inning shutout at then-No. 7 Cal State San Marcos, went the distance in game one and punched out a career-high 11 batters.
  • Game one took 2:23 while the nightcap breezed by at 1:32.

  • The Lumberjacks struck first. Takeda Bajan struck out the side but also gave up three hits, including a two-out single to catcher Izzy Starr that opened the scoring.
  • Cal Poly Humboldt had another two-out rally in the third. After two quick groundouts, it was Starr again with a solo homer to left to make it 2-0. The Lumberjacks proceeded to load the bases and Hailey Meisenbach singled home a pair before Takeda Bajan got another strikeout to limit the damage.
  • SF State stranded runners in the first and third, then broke through in the fourth with Mia Misasi's two-out single through the pitcher's legs and up the middle for a a pair of runs.
  • The Gators got another run back in the fifth. DeLeon worked a full-count walk, which chased Lumberjacks starter Gaige Garcia. Marley Gonzales dropped a bunt single on reliever Alyssa Smokey, then DeLeon and Gonzales executed a double steal. Daniella Guerrera got a run home with a sac fly.
  • In the sixth inning, Kira Nilson led off with a single, then moved to third after a sac bunt and a long fly ball. Misasi singled her home to tie the game at 4-4.
  • SF State came through in extra innings. Stenson led off with a single to right field. Pinch runner Emily Madrigal moved into scoring position on a sac bunt, then scored on Holihan's double down the left field line.

  • Takeda Bajan (4-2) earned another complete-game victory, though she did see her ERA rise to 2.63. She did not issue a walk.
  • Garcia gave up three earned runs over four innings of work. She gave up six hits, struck out two, and walked one.
  • Smokey (6-2), who started at designated player, took over in the circle for the final three and a third innings. She struck out one and allowed two runs on five hits.

  • DeLeon led off the bottom of the first with the junior's first career home run for an early 1-0 Gators lead.
  • The Gators added an insurance run with a two-out rally of their own in the third. Gonzales reached on a bunt when first baseman Katlyn Gifford bobbled the ball. Gonzales then scored all the way from first on Guerrera's double to left center.
  • Vanessa Saltos cut the lead to one with a two-out home run in the fifth.

  • Gators starter Elise Roy (4-5) went the distance in her third career complete game and faced just five over the minimum. She struck out five, gave up just one walk, and one run on four hits. In doing so, she lowered her ERA to 3.37.
  • Vanessa Richie (2-2) also went the distance and was the tough-luck loser. She gave up one earned run on five hits. She struck out one and didn't walk any.

The Gators host Cal Poly Humboldt again on Saturday, March 16 in a Noon doubleheader at SFSU Softball Field. Prior to the game at 11:40 a.m., former Humboldt State player Chrissy Stalf will be honored for her induction into the CCAA Hall of Fame. Stalf was also a former Humboldt State teammate of current San Francisco State Head Coach Alicia Reid
