POMONA, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseball team punched its ticket into the CCAA Championship game with a 5-4 victory over Cal Poly Pomona. Facing the top pitching staff in the conference, the Gators had key two-out hits that led to runs, including a four-run rally in the fifth.
- The Gators improve to 31-23 and head to the title game for the first time in history.
- The defense held strong for the Gators as Cal Poly Pomona finished with eight left on base.
- Justin Johnson and Jacob French each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Johnson's 2RBI single in the fifth gave him 71 RBIs and tying the single season record. Johnson also is now at 81 hits on the season, eight shy of tying another school record.
- All hits in the game were from 1 through 5 in the line-up.
- SF State did not receive any free bases as the Gators did not draw a walk, get hit by a pitch or reach by error.
Armando Murillo hit a two-out single in the third. French hit the ball near the left field line. Cal Poly Pomona Jack Sanders tried to make the diving catch but the ball fell for a double, allowing Murillo to come home.
The Gators faced their biggest threat so far in the top of the fifth with bases loaded and two outs, but
Ethan Remmers delivered a strikeout to end the threat.
SF State had a huge two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-0. With the bases loaded and Johnson up to bat, the hot hitter launched the ball to left field to allow two runs to cross.
Derek Laferriere hit the ball to left center to clear the bases and take the lead.
Sanders put a run up on the board for the Broncos in the sixth, homering over left center. Pomona hit an RBI single up the middle with a runner on third in the seventh to cut the Gators' lead to 5-2. The runner at first stole second as the next batter hit the ball into left to make it a 5-4 lead.
With a chance to win the game, the Gators turned to
David Eichhorn to pitch the last two innings. Eichhorn allowed a lead-off single in each of his two innings, but got three straight outs after each hit to record a zero on the scoreboard.
- Mickey Radanovich did not give up a hit until four and two third of an inning. After giving up back-to-back hits, his day was done.
- Ethan Remmers (2-0) picked up the win in relief, going two innings and charged with three runs while tossing a career high four strikeouts.
- Andrew Silva pitched a third of an inning, giving up one run in the process.
- Eichhorn picked up his first save of the season after giving the Gators two shut-out innings.
- Edrian Rangel (2-3) was on the hook for the loss.
The Gators play No 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay for a championship on Saturday, May 11. SF State will need to win twice to claim the CCAA title with the first game starting at 2:00 pm. The game will be broadcast on the
