SEASIDE, Calif. — The #17 Cal State Monterey Bay Otters won game one 18-5 to force a winner take all game two. The Gators fought tooth and nail through the final game and went into the ninth tied 4-4 but the Otters scored five runs to take the game 9-5.
- The Gators end the season at 34-26. The two wins at Regionals this past week ties the 1989 team for the most wins in the NCAA postseason. The Otters improve to 38-19 and advance to Super Regionals at Point Loma.
- In game two, Justin Johnson hit an RBI double, setting a new single season RBI record with his 72nd of the season.
- The Gators were out hit 14-8 in game two with five of those hits coming in the ninth inning.
- Daniel Santos, who had four hits on the day, now has 186 career hits, third most in school history.
- Armando Murillo hit his seven home run of the season at the end of the second game.
With a pair of Gators on base and two outs,
Cole Thompson put the ball in play. The second baseman made an errant throw to first, giving both base runners enough time to score.
The Otters broke through in the fourth when Max Farfan's solo home run sparked a four-run inning for the Gators.
The Gators finally got on base via a hit in the third. Laferriere hit a double to right field to bring a run in and cut the lead to 4-3. But the Otters offense continued to churns, putting up four runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a 11-3 lead after four. The Otters would go on to score in every inning outside of the eighth to put the game away.
- Ian Sullivan (4-2) started for the Gators but only made it 1.1 innings.
- Four different Gators came in during relief and took some lumps to save arms for the next game.
- Ryan Io (5-0) went the final six innings in relief to pick up the win.
A pair of errors in the second helped a pair of runners cross to give the Otters a 2-0 lead. Olimpia doubled down the right line to position a pair of runners in scoring position. Murillo hit a single to center field to bring the first run in.
French showed off some speed to beat the throw to second for an RBI single. The Otters' Sergio Solis hit an RBI single to take the lead in the fifth. But the Gators punched back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. Santos drilled a single down the right field line to bring one runner in. Johnson got up to bat next and ripped a double towards right center for the lead.
The Gators looked to go to the bottom of the eighth with a lead, but a wild pitch from
Ethan Remmers allowed the runner on third to score.
Tied 4-4 with a chace to win in the bottom of the inning, the Otters scored five runs on five hits to take a sizable lead into the bottom of the inning. Murillo hit a solo shot for one run but the Gators could not erase the deficit.
- After recording back-to-back saves on the week, Nathan Shinn started to give the Gators the best start possible defensively. He gave up two runs through 3.1 innings, neither of them were earned.
- Andrew Silva allowed a run in the fifth but was otherwise solid through 3.2 innings, giving up two hits, a walk while tossing four strikeouts.
- Ethan Remmers came in during the eighth and gave up one run that tied the game.
- Ryan Garza (6-3) came in during the ninth to go for a scoreless frame and give the Gators a chance to win in the ninth. He was charged for five runs and was on the hook for the loss.
- Daniel Flores (5-1) took the win for the Otters.
