SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team dropped a hardfought battle, 1-0, in the 2024 season opener to visiting No. 19 Colorado School of Mines on Friday morning at Cox Stadium.
- Mines has now won all four meetings with the Gators. However, Friday's contest was a visible improvement over last year's 4-0 loss in Golden, Colorado.
- Mines possessed the ball for 52 percent of the contest while the Gators held the ball for just under half the match.
- The Gators fall to 0-1 overall while the nationally-ranked Orediggers open the season at 1-0.
- Mines held an 11-2 shot advantage. The Orediggers placed half a dozen shots on frame while both Gators attempts were on goal.
- Colorado School of Mines also held a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, in large part due to the Gators defense that kept Mines from scoring despite firing off seven shots.
The Gators, who did not record a shot in the first half, had two on frame in the second half. Emily Gehrlein-Allen's shot came in the 53rd minute and Grace Messenger attempted to tie the game with her shot in the 73rd minute. For
A goal in the 67th minute was the difference. A free kick resulted in a header from Lauren Clingman into the box to Reese McDermott. The United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-American found the back of the net for for her 35th career goal.
Cameryn Nunn (0-1) recorded five saves but took the loss for the Gators. Nunn was shaked up when she prevented a Mines scoring opportunity in the 19th minute. Play was stopped and she left to be checked by an athletic trainer, but returned a minute and a half later. In that time, Kyline Tone didn't see any action.
Sadie Wolf (1-0) stopped both Gators shots on goal to pick up the win for the Orediggers.
"Even though it's a loss it's a good start to the season versus a nationally-ranked team," said Head Coach
John DeMartini. "Last year, they [Mines] completely dominated us and that was certainly not the case today. We're building in the right direction."
