GUNNISON, Colo. — Johnny Lopez and Zach Wright each earned victories on Friday but the San Francisco State wrestling team (2-6) faced a setback to host No. 15 Western Colorado, 39-10.
Wright gave the Gators their first points of the day in 133 lb., defeating Devin Gomez by tech fall, 23-5 behind five takedowns. Lopez followed in 141 lb. with a win by fall in just 1:12, lifting SF State to an 11-6 advantage. The No. 15 Mountaineers bounced back with wins the next four bouts and a forfeit victory in 174 lb. to go back up, 27-11. Kweli Hernandez-Maitre battled it out in 184 lb., earning a takedown and a pair of escapes but Hunter Richardson was able to close it out for the 6-5 decision. Western Colorado followed with a tech fall and a major decision during the final two bouts, securing the home win. The Gators lost one point due to an unsportsmanlike penalty, making the final score 39-10.
