ATHERTON, Calif. - RV San Francisco State wrestling team (5-7) narrowly fell to host Menlo (8-3) on Thursday night, dropping their regular-season finale by a final score of 22-19.
The Oaks took the first match (125 lb.) by an 8-1 decision to earn three points. Zach Wright put SF State on the board in 133 lb. with a 16-4 Major Decion, his eighth-straight win of the season. No. 7 Johnny Lopez continued his stellar campaign with his 19th win this year, a 13-5 decision in 141 lb. as the Gators now led 8-3. Sean Yamasaki kept it rolling with another Major Decision, 13-1, in 149 lb. The hosts got three more points in 157 lb. after Ezekiel Lara won by an 11-7 decision over Andre Dargani. Kyle Botelho defeated his opponent in 165 lb., winning by Major Decision, 12-2 to make it a 16-6 lead in the dual.
SF State faced a setback in 174 lb. due to a medical forfeit, making the dual score, 16-12 in favor of the Gators. Menlo got a big win in 184 lb. via a pin in the second frame, giving the Oaks six more points and an 18-16 advantage. Steven Karas fell by Major Decision, 9-0 in 197 lb., allowing Menlo to widen their lead to 22-16. Laith Gilmore closed it out in 285 lb. with a sudden victory to earn three points, but the deficit was too steep for the Gators in the 22-19 decision.
