BSB | Gators Grand Slam Twice, Split Twin Bill

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseball team continued to show its prowess at the plate. In game one of a doubleheader with #28 Cal State San Bernardino, the Gators won 12-4 with a grand slam from Kyle Olimpia highlighting the offense. In game two, the Gators rally down 7-1 to take a 8-7 lead but ultimately fell 9-8.

By the Numbers


 

  • SF State sits at 8-7 on the season and 4-3 in the CCAA. The Yotes sit at 12-5 and 4-3 in the CCAA.
  • The grand slam by Olimpia in game one and Stephen Espinoza in game two were also their first career home runs with the Gators. AJ Schrader hit his second of the season, giving him 16 career home runs. Michael Cunningham, who hit his seventh in game two, also sits at 16 home runs.
  • Jackson Wood recorded five walks including four in game two.
  • Cunningham and Espinoza were a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

How It Happened - Game One



Schrader sent the ball over the fence in the top of the second to get the Gators on the board first. Cunningham hit a lead-off single in the top of the fifth, advanced to third on a single by Daniel Murillo and scored off a sac fly by Nicholas Allred. With bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth, Olimpia took an 0-2 count and launched the ball out of play to give the Gators a 6-0 lead. The bases loaded again in the top of the eighth. Allred hit a 2RBI single, Justin Johnson hit a sac fly and a fourth run scored on an error. The Yotes cut the deficit to 10-4 in the bottom of the inning but Cunningham added another run on a ground-out and a wild pitch brought Olimpia home.

On The Mound - Game One


 

  • Nathan Shinn (2-1) put together his best start of the season and pitched seven shut-out innings. He tossed five strikeouts while giving up four hits and two walks.
  • Scott Bauman and Jake Spence relieved Shinn.
  • Dylan O'Connor (2-1) was on the hook for the loss.

How It Happened - Game Two



Cunningham doubled to open the second game and Allred brought him home with a double of his own. A two-run home run by Daryl Ruiz put the Yotes on top in the bottom of the inning. San Bernardino scored five runs in the second with three coming from a home run. The Gators got two runs back off a two-run homer from Cunningham in the fourth. Three straight walks allowed the bases to be juiced with one out in the top of the fifth. Schrader pinch hit and moved everyone up with a single. Esiponza went over center field to make it a new ball game and give the Gators a 8-7 lead. The Yotes got a run off three hits in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. The Gators gave up a lead off walk in the bottom of seventh and an error put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs. A wild pitch from Anthony Alvarez allowed the runner from third to score.

On The Mound - Game Two


 

  • Alek Trukki only made it through an inning before being pulled. He gave up five runs off four hits.
  • River Diaz De Leon went two innings in relief, giving up two runs off three hits and tossing two strikeouts.
  • Jude Atley gave the Gators 2.1 innings of work and allowed one run.
  • Tied 8-8, Anthony Alvarez (1-1) was tasked with keeping the game going in the bottom of the seventh but Yotes scored and Alvarez took the loss.
  • Carter Herrera (1-1) earned the win in relief.
