SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 21 San Francisco State softball team kept things rolling with a doubleheader sweep of host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon, 8-0 in six innings and 9-4.
- SF State, which is ranked No. 21 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, moves to 20-6 on the season and 9-3 in CCAA action. The Otters slip to 13-12 overall and 5-9 in CCAA play.
- SF State recorded its seventh shutout of the season, including three straight, and won its third game of the season by run rule.
- The Gators' 12 hits in game two were the second most this season and the most by the team in a CCAA game this season.
- Kai DeLeon had a four-hit day and now has a team-leading 37 on the season. Her 183 career hits are tied for ninth all-time in program history with Jennifer Lewis (2013-16).
- Rylee McDaniel had three hits in game two, including a pair of home runs.
- Daniella Guerrera and Lexi Holihan both had two-hit games in game one. Marley Gonzales and Kira Nilson both had two-hit games in game two. Nilson had a three-hit day and scored four runs with two RBI and a stolen base.
- Guerrera drove in four runs on the day, giving her 23 on the season and 88 on her career. She is now tied for ninth place on the program's all-time leaders list with Kelsey Wood (2008-11).
- The Gators stole six bases on the day, bringing the team total to 60 on the season. That passes the 2004 (56) and 2017 (57) squads for sole possession of ninth place all-time in team single season history. Last year's squad is in eighth place with 72.
- Gonzales swiped four of those bases to bring her season total up to a team-leading 22. With 62 career steals, she now passes DeLeon for sole possession of fourth place on the program's career leaders list.
Game 1
- The Gators got things going right away. Gonzales walked, then stole second and third, and scored on Guerrera's sac fly to right field.
- The Otters threatened in the second with Areola's leadoff double to right center. However, pinch runner Brea Grimsley was picked off by Gonzales.
- SF State added two more runs in the third inning. DeLeon singled and scored on a Gonzales double. Gonzales then stole third again and scored on a Guerrera infield single.
- A manufactured run in the fourth plated another run for SF State. Kira Nilson worked a full-count walk, Lexi Holihan dropped a bunt single, and Nilson made it to third on the play as the result of a throwing error. Nilson came home on a double steal attempt.
- The game was halted headed to the bottom of the fourth due to a rain delay, then the Gators plated a fifth run in the fifth inning. DeLeon singled to lead off the inning and scored on a Guerrera single to left center. More rain paused the game after that.
- Once play resumed, the Gators scored an unearned run in the sixth. Nilson and Holihan both singled and Nilson scored as the result of a throwing error. Pinch runners Olivia Clavero and Emily Madrigal both scored later in the inning to make it 8-0.
- Elise Roy (8-2) scattered five hits in the six-inning complete game. She tossed 83 pitches with one walk and one strikeout.
- Otters starter Savannah Madrigal (7-3) was charged with eight runs, six earned, on eight hits over five innings. She walked three with one strikeout.
- Kaitlyn Le entered with a pair of runners in scoring position and no outs. Both runners came around to score despite Le not giving up a hit. She recorded back-to-back strikeouts.
Game 2
- In the second inning, McDaniel connected on the second pitch she saw for a home run to center field and an early Gators lead.
- The Gators committed three throwing errors in the second inning and the Otters took advantage and grabbed the lead. Oil Perez hit into a fielder's choice but a run came in on a bad throw. With the runners in motion, the Otters added two more runs when Takeda Bajan made an errant throw to first. She limited the damage and got out of the inning with a pickoff and a strikeout.
- SF State got a run back in the fifth. DeLeon ripped a leadoff double down the first base line and later scored on another Guerrera sac fly.
- A two-out error in the sixth proved costly for the Otters and allowed a pair of runs to score, which gave the Gators a 4-3 lead.
- The Gators blew it open in the top of the seventh. Gonzales doubled, Guerrera singled, and Shaunessy Cardwell singled home Gonzales to make it 5-3. With one out, Kira Nilson smacked a two-run doubled to center, and McDaniel followed with a two-run homer to right field.
- CSUMB got a run back in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Abreanna Alba's RBI double.
- Mari Takeda Bajan (8-2) earned the win with a 115-pitch complete-game effort. She allowed four runs, but just one earned, on four hits. She walked five and struck out five.
- The Otters used three different pitchers. Mikaya Griego faced eight batters and gave up three hits and a walk in and inning and a third of work. She was chased by McDaniel's first home run.
- Kadence Nulick came on in relief and gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits. She struck out three in four and two thirds innings of work.
- Le worked was charged with four runs in just an inning of relief.
