Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The No. 22 San Francisco State softball team won its opening game in the CCAA Tournament presented by FloCollege. The second seeded Gators won 3-1 over third seeded RV Cal State San Marcos.
- SF State, which is ranked No. 22 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll and had a first round bye in the CCAA Tournament, moves to 35-18. The Cougars slipped to 36-19, though they remained alive in the tournament with a 3-1 over No. 13 Cal State East Bay, eliminating the tourney's top seed.
- The win is an important for the Gators, who are ranked second in the West Region. SF State is now 4-1 versus the Cougars, who are ranked third in the West Region, this season.
- Thursday marked the Gators' first CCAA Tournament win since 2019. That team featured freshman All-American Brylynn Vallejos and reached the NCAA Division II West Regional but that squad was derailed by the pandemic, and the Gators missed the postseason by just a game in back-to-back seasons in 2022 and 2023. Last season, the Gators lost their opening round game to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
- Before the game, the Gators' All-CCAA honorees were recognized: First Team selections Kai DeLeon and Rylee McDaniel, Second Team selections Marley Gonzales and Marissa Jordan; and Honorable Mention selections Daniella Guerrera and Mari Takeda Bajan.
- Kira Nilson was recognized with the Elite 13 award for a second consecutive year. The award recognizes the academic and athletic achievement of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
- The Gators turned their 31st double play of the season, an inning-ending 3-2 rundown in the fourth inning that saw both players occupying third base called out.
- Gonzales and Ashley Rocha each had a two-hit game.
- Jordan drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, though the Gators missed a chance to add on.
- The Cougars stranded a pair in the second and the Gators added on when pinch runner Emily Madrigal scored on a wild pitch.
- The Gators made it 3-0 in the fifth when McDaniel singled to center. A bobble allowed Gonzales to score from second.
- Delaney Prater got the Cougars on the board in the top of the sixth with a one-out RBI single to left field.
- Takeda Bajan (17-6) scattered seven hits in another complete-game effort. She struck out five and walked three.
- Cougars starter Savannah Coyle (11-8) allowed three runs in four and a third innings. She walked four and struck out three.
- Dahlia Fink pitched a scoreless inning and two thirds of relief for CSUSM.
The No. 22 Gators face host Sonoma State on Friday at Noon. The winner of that game will advance to Championship Saturday while the loser will face elimination versus Cal State San Marcos at 2:30 p.m. For more information, visit
