SB | #22 Gators' Historic Season Ends in West Regional

SAN FRANCISCO – The No. 22 San Francisco State softball team's historic season didn't have the fairytale ending the Gators were hoping for. In their eighth and ninth meetings of the season, RV Cal State San Marcos bested the Gators in the NCAA Division II Softball West Regional, 3-2 and 16-4 in five innings.

By the Numbers

  • SF State, which is ranked No. 22 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll finishes the season at 39-20. The Cougars improve to 42-21 and will face the four seed, No. 9 Western Washington. WWU went 3-0 in its Regional and twice knocked off the top seed, No. 15 Cal State East Bay.
  • It was a historic season for the Gators and their seniors.
  • Daniella Guerrera had an RBI on her final day. She ties the program record for most in a season with 44 and finishes with 108 career RBI, second-most in program history.
  • Rylee McDaniel launched 11 home runs this season, which is tied for the program record in a single season.
  • Kai DeLeon had a hit and finishes the season with a .396 batting average, which is fourth highest by a Gator in a single season. Her .357 batting average is second highest by a Gator in their career. She also finishes with 69 stolen bases, which is fifth all-time.
  • Marley Gonzales finishes fourth all-time in program history with 71 stolen bases.
  • The Gators turned their 37th double play of the season, which ties Sonoma State for most in NCAA Division II.
  • In their final loss, the Gators gave up a season-high 16 runs, 10 of which came with two outs.

REGIONAL GAME 6

How They Scored
  • Cal State San Marcos started the scoring in the third.  Gators starter Elise Roy walked Madison Waymire to load the bases, then Donnelly delivered an RBI single. Jillian Albayati drew a bases-loaded walk, and Delaney Prater singled to left center to make it 3-0. The Gators got out of the jam with a bases-loaded, 1-4 double play that glanced off Roy into McDaniel's glove, and the second baseman stepped on second to end the inning.
  • SF State got a run back in the bottom half of the inning with a Guerrera two-out double to wall in left center that scored Marley Gonzales from first. Cardwell followed with a liner back to the circle. Cougars pitcher Savannah Coyle put her glove up to defend herself and the ball glanced through the left side, which allowed Guerrera to score from second.
  • However, that's all the scoring the game would see.  The Gators stranded a leadoff runner in the fourth, had two on with one out in the sixth, and in the seventh, the Gators got a pair into scoring position but McDaniel had a rare foul out to end the game.

How They Scored

  • Waymire led the game off with a single to left, then the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs thanks to back-to-back walks. Prater poked a bloop single down the left field line for a 1-0 to keep the line moving.  An Arredondo fielder's choice made it 2-0 early. However, the Gators answered the call in the bottom half of the inning. DeLeon singled through the right side and was safe at second on a Gonzales sacrifice bunt, Guerrera was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Marissa Jordan drew a four-pitch walk and Kira Nilson cleared the bases with a double off the top of the center field wall to make it 4-2.
  • However, the Cougars scored 14 unanswered runs, including a five-run rally in the top of the second, all with two outs. CSUM scored three more in the third, again all with two outs. The Cougars loaded the bases in the fourth and scored two more runs, and scored four runs on five hits in the fifth.
