WRE | Three Gators Take Gold at Mat 'Cat Open

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - The San Francisco State wrestling team opened 2026 at the Mat 'Cat Open, hosted by Linfield University. Three Gators won their events while another three placed third.

2025 National Champion Johnny Lopez and Kydyn Lima made their season debuts in dominate fashion to win their weight classes. The pair recorded pins in the first three of their matches, with Lopez's opening match only lasting 16 seconds. Antonio Aramburu won his first collegiate tournament, winning by tech fall and major decisions in his first two matches.

Three more Gators placed third. Khaisen Chen wrestled at 133lbs for the first time this season. After recording a pin to open the day, he dropped the next match. Chen won two more matches by fall in his path for third. Andre Dargani reached the semifinals of 149lbs but fell by decision. He bounced back in the next match with a tech fall and earned third place with a medical forfeit. Xander Erolin fell short of making the championship round with a 4-2 loss but won by major decision in the next two matchs to take third.
