WRE | Three Gators Punch Tickets to Nationals, Lopez Wins Title at Super Regional VI

| By:

GOLDEN, Colo - The #19 San Francisco State wrestling team competed at the NCAA Division II Super Regional XI hosted by Colorado School of Mines in hopes of individuals securing a spot at National Championships. Johnny Lopez, Basil Othman and Kydyn Lima all punched their tickets by finishing in the top three of their respective weight classes. It marks the first time since 2015 the Gators have sent three wrestlers to nationals.

As a team, the Gators finish sixth out of 13 teams.

Johnny Lopez will have a chance to defend his National Championship title after winning the Regional at 141lbs. He became the first Gator to win a Regional title since Isaiah Hurtado won at 133lbs in 2014 and first at 141lbs to win it since Hall of Famer Naveed Bagheri did in 2013. Coming into the tournament as the top ranked wrestler nationally in his weight class, Lopez picked up a quick victory in his opening match and pinned his opponent in 52 seconds. Lopez faced some adversity in the quarterfinal when his opponent recorded a pair of takedowns to cut his lead down to 8-6. But Lopez got a point for an escape and earned an extra point at the end for riding time. Lopez won his semifinal match 13-6 and did not allow a point in his Championship match against Adams States' Kieran Thompson.

After not wrestling during the 2024-25 season, Othman will return to Nationals for the second time in his career at 157lbs. Othman advanced to the semifinals with a 10-3 victory over Western Colorado's Vincent Cabral. He fell to eventual Regional Champion Aaden Valdez in the semis but bounced back big with a tech fall victory in the Consolation Semifinals. Othman was tied 1-1 with Nebraska Kearney's Cael Robb at the end of the third period during his third place match. Othman secured a takedown in overtime to clinch the match and punch his ticket back to Nationals.

Lima makes it to Nationals for the first time in his career with a third place finish at 174lbs. He dropped his first match by fall to CSU Pueblo's Solomon Arnds-Volcin but was dominate the rest of the way. He won by major decision in three of his four consolation round matches and picked up a pin in the other one. Lima got his revenge against Arnds-Volcin and won 13-5 to advance to the third place match. Lima took an early lead with a pair of takedowns and continued to record takedowns until he earned the tech fall.

Zane Stoddard also dropped his first match by fall and wrestled his way back into the third place match. He faced Colorado Mesa's Alex Castaneda in a rematch and fell again for a fourth place finish.
