Coni Staff served as the San Francisco State softball's first head coach (1977 and 1978). Her athletic achievements and academic excellence in high school earned her a national E.R. Moore Scholarship to Illinois State University, where she became a four-sport varsity athlete, excelling in softball, basketball, volleyball, and field hockey. She played in the International Women's Professional Softball Association and coached at Cal from 1974 to 1975. She was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025 for her career as an athlete, teacher, and coach.

Diane Kalliam served as the program's second head coach, from 1979 to 1999. Her 21 seasons are by far the most by a coach in program history. She led the Gators to the 1981 AIAW West Regional championship and a berth in the College World Series. Her 1983 squad was also the Northern California Athletic Conference co-champions, while her 1988 team finished second in the league standings. That season, Kalliam garnered NCAC Coach of the Year honors after showing a 23-win improvement in the victory column from the year before. Kalliam received her master of arts degree in physical education from SF State in 1979 and served as an instructor in the University's kinesiology department for 22 before retiring in 1999. Kalliam played amateur softball for 14 years, competing in seven ASA national championships, while accumulating a .430 batting average. At the 1975 ASA Major Fast-Pitch Championships, she batted .632 to set a tournament record that lasted until 2005. Coach Kalliam holds the program record with 293 career wins, including a 29-win season in 1991. Kalliam was selected to the National Softball Hall of Fame in 1984 and to the SF State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.

The family of Jordanna Freemer will honor the memory of the four-time All-CCAA selection on StrikeOut Cancer Day. Jordanna is part of the 2005 softball team that was inducted into the SF State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. That squad is the winningest team in program history and went on to win the NCAA Division II West Regional for the first time in program history, and finished fifth at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Jordanna earned CCAA Freshman of the Year and remains the Gators' career leader with 33 home runs, 137 RBI, 152 runs scored, and is tied for first with 98 walks. Megan Clark was a four-year starter from 2014-17. In her senior year, the lefty pitcher was named to the NFCA Division II All-Region Second Team and to the All-CCAA Second Team. That season, Clark notched 12 wins with a 3.33 ERA and also excelled at the plate in her senior season with a team-best .357 batting average, that, at the time, put her in the Top 10 in an individual season. The San Miguel native still ranks second in program history with 122 games pitched. After graduating from SF State, Clark went on to serve as pitching coach for the Swedish National Team and returned to SF State as the team's pitching coach in 2024 and 2025.
