WRE | Lima Earns All-American Status After Day One at Nationals

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota - The San Francisco State Wrestling team completed in Day one of the NCAA Division II Championships, held at Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Kydyn Lima earned All-American status after the first day of competition. He won three straight matches at 174lbs for a spot in the semifinals Saturday, March 14. The Gators will have All-Americans in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Lima is the first All-American at 174lb since Gene Choi in 2011. He will face #3 seed Otgonbayar Batsuuri of Nebraska Kearney in the semifinals tomorrow for a chance to punch a ticket to the finals.

Lima won his championship preliminary match over Drake Hayward of Minnesota State by Major Decision. Lima held a slim 11-10 lead heading into the third period. He escaped to start the third period and pulled away late with a takedown with 12 seconds remaining and a nearfall as time expired. Lima faced #7 seed Tyler Morrison of Pitt-Johnstown in his next match. After building a 8-1 lead in the first period, Morrision opened the second period with an escape and closed the gap with a takedown. Lima held on in the third period and did not allow another point to advance in the bracket. Lima trailed 4-0 to #14 seed Jakob Smith of Colorado School of Mines heading into the third period but scored a pair of takedowns to help take a 6-5 lead. Smith escaped to tie the match but Lima scored a takedown in the final seconds to become an All-American.

Basil Othman had a tough opening draw facing the #1 seed Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma and was pinned in 1:37. He picked up a 9-5 win in the first blood round match over #9 seed Michael Ortega of University of Indianpolis. Othman was tied 6-6 with #7 seed Holden Huhn of Gannon after three periods. Huhn picked bottom in overtime and got a reversal to take the lead and win the match.

Johnny Lopez's bid to defend his title at 141lbs ended in the first match. Lopez built a 10-0 lead over Ronan Schuelke of McKendree in the second period. Schuelke came back to tie the match and eventually pinned Lopez in 6:12. Lopez went on to lose his next match to #8 seed Ethan Hardy of Glenville State 12-8.
