SAN FRANCISCO —
Alexis Perez gave the San Francisco State softball team 13 innings of work in the circle in two wins over Cal Poly Humboldt. The Gators took advantage of errors in game one and had timely hits in a 9-1 victory in six innings.
Marissa Jordan hit an RBI ground-out to give the Gators a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning that they would hold onto for the win.
- The Gators hosted their first responders' game. Prior to the start of the game Alumni and law enforcement officers Lori Curran, Jamie Haymond and Paul Yep tossed out the ceremonial first pitches.
- The Gators improve to 13-10 on the season and 4-4 in the CCAA. Humboldt falls to 9-14 and 1-3 in the CCAA
- Humboldt had three errors in game one.
- Marissa Jordan hit her second home run of the season, a shot to center field that hit the police officer's car.
- Jordan and Shaunessy Cardwell powered the offense in game one, each recording three RBIs.
- The Gators had eight stolen bases between the two games.
- Ashley Rocha was perfect at the plate and went 5-for-5 between two games. She had a crucial RBI in game two and three runs in game one.
After a fly-out to make it two outs in the top of the first, the Humboldt runner advanced and a bad throw from the shortstop allowed a run to cross. The Gators had two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the third. Malia Morreira put the ball in play and an errant throw by the shortstop allowed two runs to score before Morreira was tagged out. Cardwell took a four pitch walk and Jordan hit a home run to center field to extend the lead to 4-1.
The bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Humboldt induced a ground-out to home to preserve a run. Morreira got on by error and everyone advanced a base. Cardwell hit a single the second baseman could not contain to bring two more runs in and a wild pitch advanced the runners to extend the lead to 8-1. In the bottom of the sixth, the Gators had runners in scoring position with one out when Cardwell came up to bat. She hit it deep enough to right field for the runner to come home and end the game up 9-1.
- Alexis Perez (7-3) gave up one run that would go down as unearned. She limited Humboldt to four hits and only walked one batter.
- Mason Hatton (2-3) only went 2.1 innings before being relieved.
After three scoreless innings, Shelby Shanks hit a lead-off single up the middle for Humboldt. She advanced on a ground-out and a single down the right field line allowed her to score the first run of the game. Deziree Gomez came in to pinch hit and hit a single to the short stop in the bottom of the fifth. Gomez stole second and got a good job when Rocha hit a single down the left field line to score and tie the game. In the bottom of the sixth Cardwell hit a one-out double to left field. Anaissa Del Rio came in to pinch run and stole second. Jordan put the ball in play and the short stop fielded it. Humboldt's short stop hesitated on the throw home and went for the force-out at first, allowing the Gators to score. The next three Humboldt batters were retired in order.
- Alexis Perez (8-3) was a work horse for the Gators. She was more efficient in the longer game, only tossing 75 pitches in seven innings. She gave up four hits and a run and tossed two strikeouts.
- Lily Fournier (4-8) took the loss after a strong day of her own. She gave up six hits, two runs and no walks. She struck out five batters.
The Gators will travel south to face Cal State San Marcos for a four game series starting March 20 at 1 p.m. Fans can watch at home on FloCollege.
