Goodwin begins his tenure with the SF State track and field team as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2022 season. He is a current amateur coach for his team, San Francisco Track and Field Club. This club was founded in 1982 and Chris has been coaching sprinters on the team since 2009. He has developed training programs based on his own experience with personal sprint trainers, from online programs such as can be purchased on the site, Complete Track and Field LLC as well as many hours of research annually.
In January of 2020, Goodwin was hired by the SF Unified School District to coach sprinters at Claire Lilienthal Middle School. The school team consisted of about 40 sprinters grades 6 to 8. In his first stint as a professional coach as well as coaching children, Goodwin was able to adapt to the new professional challenge. Goodwin tailored his coaching style to approach the variety of students he coached. Ten weeks into the season, COVID put a halt to everything. In that short time frame, Goodwin made a positive connection with every child on the team.
In the sport, Goodwin is very competitive. He competes in several Masters and Seniors track meets every year, with many of those meets being sanctioned by the USATF. A member of the USATF, Goodwin is All American in the 400m and 800m events. In 2018, he ranked 33rd in the world in the 400m which put him in the top 7% of world masters. That same year, he ranked 9th in the US placing him in the top 6% of US masters. In the 800m, he had similar rankings. This past season, he raced the 400m and came in 4th overall out of 29 runners aged 25 to 71. His age graded performance ranked him as coming in second. The trainers that Chris has used over the years, to work his program and borrow from for training the team, include local well know coaches and competitors such as Aaron Thigpen, Mark Jellison and Shannon Maas.
