San Francisco, Calif.--- After being predicted to finish last in the CCAA Preseason Poll, SF State Gators finished their regular season in a five-way tie for third place in the CCAA as they won their regular season home finale 73-64 over the visiting UC San Diego Tritons (15-11, 11-9 CCAA) this evening at SF State's Main Gymnasium. The Gators (16-11, 11-9 CCAA) now await word from the CCAA to see who they play in the First Round of the CCAA Basketball Championships this Tuesday, March 4.
“The guys really answered the challenge with a great defensive effort,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. “It's really encouraging to get some positive momentum going into the tournament,” added Treseler. “We played play-off caliber defense tonight and I know we can take that down to Southern California with us.”
SF State opened the first half outscoring the Tritons 20-8. The Gators increased their lead to 24-11 on a
Will Logan (Jr, G/F, Apple Valley, Calif/Apple Valley HS) jumper with 7:00 to go in the half. UC San Diego went on a 9-3 run to cut into the Gator lead 27-20 with 2:29 to go in the first stanza. The Gators took a 30-22 lead into the locker room.
UC San Diego outscored the Gators 8-2 in the first four minutes to cut into SF State's lead (32-30). The Gators followed that with a 8-0 run capped by a
Chris Rodriguez (Sr, F, San Francisco, Calif/Southern Oregon University) lay-up to take a 40-30 lead with 15:07 on the clock. Once again, the Tritons battled back to cut the Gator lead to just 43-40 with 11:05 to go, but the Gators came back with a 9-2 run to increase their lead back to nine (57-48) with 6:26 to go.
The Tritons went on a 6-0 run to cut into the Gator lead, 57-54 with just 4:20 to go. SF State finished the game outscoring its visitors 16-10 to take the 73-64 victory. The Gators went 8 for 8 from the charity stripe in the final 45 seconds to secure the win.
The Gators held UC San Diego to just 28% shooting including 23% from three's while forcing 17 turnovers. Andrew Hatch led the Tritons with 18 points while Clint Allard added 16.
Robert Hayes (Fr, G, San Diego, Calif/St. Augustine's HS) paced the Gators with 15 and was one of five players in double figures.
Rodriguez finished with his first double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
