Hoskins Hits Game-Winner in Gators' 60-58 Road CCAA Win in Seaside

SF State junior transfer Marquel Hoskins Hit the Game-Winner in the Gators' 60-58 Win at Cal State Monterey Bay
Seaside, Calif.--- With time running out, junior transfer Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College)hit a 13 foot floater to give the visiting SF State Gators the 60-58 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road victory over the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (3-5, 1-2 CCAA).   Freshman guard Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, California, Skyline ) led the way for the Gators with 10 points.
            “Hats off to Cal State Monterey Bay, they battled hard and showed a lot of heart,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. “We did not do everything correctly to close it out but thanks to Marquel (Hoskins), we got ourselves off the hook,” added Treseler. “Tim Pratt (Eureka, California, College of the Redwoods) gave us a huge jolt,” noted Treseler. “This is a huge week for us and we feel good about starting with a road win over a tough team,”
            SF State (9-2, 2-1 CCAA) jumped out to an early 13-5 lead in the first seven minutes of the game The Gators increased its lead to 17 (35-18) on a Ralph Nevarez (West Covina, California, East Los Angeles College) jumper with 3:42 left in the half. SF State took a 40-25 lead into the locker room as the Gators held the Otters to 25% shooting from the field in the first stanza and connected on 47% of their shots.

            The Otters outscored their visitors 18-10 in the first 12 minutes of the second half as they cut the Gator lead to 50-43. SF State scored the next four points on a jumper by Hoskins and a lay-up by Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) to build its lead back to double digits (54-43) with 6:50 left in regulation.
            Cal State Monterey Bay would not go away as the Otters outscored the Gators 15-4 in the next five minutes to tie the game at 58-58 on a three by Ian Hosford with just 1:23 left on the clock. 
            SF State took a time out and the Otters stopped the Gators to regain possession with 46 seconds to go. It was the Gators' turn as the Otters missed a three and O'Rourke grabbed one of his career high 9 rebounds with 29 ticks left on the clock to set up the heroics for Hoskins. The Beloit, Wisconsin, native then hit the game-winner with no time left to give the Gators the 60-58 win.
            Devion Berry had 10 points to lead the way for the Otters, who shot 31% from the field and had 19 turnovers. SF State out-rebounded the Otters 41-33 while Pratt, O'Rourke, and Hoskins all finished with nine points apiece for the Gators, who return home this Saturday, January 2nd at 7:30pm for a CCAA game against Sonoma State University.
