Otters Use 7 Three-Pointers in Second Half To Key 50-47 Comeback Win Over SF State

Andrea Ohlssen Led the Gators with 10 Points
Seaside, Calif. -- Cal State Monterey Bay connected on seven of 14 attempts from three-point land in the second half, including four in the final seven minutes to key the Otters' 50-47 victory over the visiting SF State Gators. With the win, the Otters improve to 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and 4-1 overall. Andrea Ohlssen (Pacifica, Cal Poly Pomona) led the Gators with 10 points.
“It is difficult to win games when you are not able to score the ball,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace. “We have to figure out that it takes 40 minutes to win at the college level, not just 20."
SF State took a 6-2 lead in the first four minutes of the first half with all six points coming from Ohlssen. The Otters outscored the Gators 6-2 to tie the game at 8-8 at the 13:14 mark. The visitors outscored their hosts 12-3 in the next seven minute, capped by a Kalia Williams (Los Angeles, California, San Jose State University) lay-up to take a 14-9 lead. They increased their lead to 28-16 (their largest of the half) on a Dominique Hunter jumper.
The Otters came out strong in the second period as they cut SF State's advantage to 26-25 on a three by Veronica Williams in the first three minutes of the second stanza. The Gators (4-5, 1-2 CCAA) went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to seven at 32-25 with 13:59 left on the clock.
Cal State Monterey Bay took its first lead of the game with 9:54 run as Helen Suarez capped a 12-4 run to give the Otters a 37-36 lead. SF State came back though and retook the lead as the Gators scored the next three points to take a 39-37 lead on a lay-up by Jessica Hout-Freeman (Fremont, California, Washington). The Otters outscored SF State 6-0 in the next two minutes and took a 43-39 lead on a three by Michelle Santizo, a lead they would not relinquish as they held on for a 50-47 victory.
Williams led the way for the Otters with a game-high 16 points, connecting on four of her eight attempts from beyond the arc, while grabbing seven rebounds. Santizo added 13 points for Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Gators  out-rebounded Cal State Monterey Bay, 34-27 while forcing Otter 17 turnovers. Dominique Hunter (San Francisco, California, Gateway) added eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Gators, who will return home this Saturday, Dec. 12, at 5:30 p.m. when they host Dominican University in a non-conference game.
