Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif.--- The UC San Diego Tritons shot 51% from the field including 57% in the half to key their 72-50 CCAA victory over the visiting SF State Gators this evening at UC San Diego's RIMAC Arena. Mike Meza paced the Tritons with a game high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field including going 5-for-6 from three-point range while Christian Hatch added 12 points for the Tritons.
“We could not hit a shot in the first half and we are struggling to find our identity,” said SF State Head Coach
Paul Trevor. “Our hats are off to UC San Diego as they played really well this evening.”
The Tritons (5-5, 1-4 CCAA) were 8-of-13 fromo three-point range with Meza leading the way with his five three-pointers. James McCann connected on two of his three-point attempts and MacKenzie McCullough had the other three for Tritons.
SF State (2-8, 0-4 CCAA) was held to just 25% shooting in the first half and finished shooting 40% for the game while getting out-rebounded 35-22 by the Tritons. UC San Diego also shot well from the charity stripe connecting on 18 of its 20 attempts. The Gators were just 9-of-19 from the line.
UC San Diego opened the game scoring the first nine points of the game. The Tritons increased their lead to 34-13 as Meza connected on one of his three-pointers with 1:39 left in the first stanza.
James Albright's free throw cut the Triton lead to 34-16 going in the locker room at the half.
The Tritons continued their offensive onslaught in the second half as they built their lead to 66-36 at the 6:52 mark of the second half on a Ryan Wheeler lay-up.
SF State ended the game outscoring its hosts, 14-6 to make the final 72-50 UC San Diego.
Robbie Herndon and
Nefi Perdomo each led the Gators with 11 points apiece. Herndon went 4-of-6 from the field and 1-of-2 while going 2-of-3 from the line in 19 minutes off the bench for SF State. Perdomo was 4-of-8 from the field, 2-for-3 from three's but 1-of-4 from the charity stripe.
The Gators will return to the court tomorrow evening at 7:30pm in San Bernardino, Calif., for another CCAA game with the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. The 8
th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos defeated the Coyotes 85-76 in overtime in San Bernardino this evening.
