Cal State East Bay Rallies From 9-Point Deficit to Defeat Gators 80-76

SAN FRANCISCOThe visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers (2-2, 1-0 CCAA) were down 65-56 with 10:18 left in the game and went on a 13-0 run to take a 67-65 lead. The Pioneers never looked back as they dug in for a 80-76 victory.  Jacari Whitfield led the way for the Pioneers with 15 points while Decensae White had a game high 16 points to lead SF State. 
 
“We made some crucial mistakes down the stretch,” said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  “We need to learn on how to build on a lead,” added Trevor.  “Cal State East Bay made a good run and we did not deal well with adversity.”
 
SF State (2-3, 0-1 CCAA) opened the game with a 9-4 lead and increased its lead to 14-7 with 15:37 on the clock. 
 
The Pioneers  battled back back to go on a 11-2 run capped by a Donavon Jackson three-point play to give the visitors a 18-16 lead.  Jurrell Turner's two made free throws gave the Pioneers a 30-26 lead. 
 
SF State took a 31-30 lead on a James Albright made free throw, but Cal State East Bay's Vincent Capellino's lay-up gave the Pioneers a 41-36 lead with 4:18 on the first half lock.
 
The Gators ended the half outscoring the Pioneers 10-2 with Brandon Tatum's tip-in dunk giving them a 46-43 lead heading into the locker room.
 
Cal State East Bay brought out  some firepower early in the second half as the Pioneers took a 52-50 lead on a jumper by Gabe Kindred in the first three minutes of the new stanza. 
 
Winston Demmin's tip-in capped a 12-3 Gator run to give the hosts a 62-53 lead with a little under 13 minutes to go in regulation. 
 
Demmin hit a three at the 10:18 mark of the second half to give the Gators a 65-56 lead and that is when the Pioneers made their run. 
 
The Pioneers outscored SF State 13-0 in the next three minutes to take a 69-64 lead on a Nick Marshall jumper.  The Pioneers went on to increase their lead to 70-65 on two free throws by Kindred. 
 
The Gators tied the score at 71-71 on a jumper by White with 3:58 to go, but once again Cal State East Bay started another run. The visitors outscored SF State 8-2 to take a 78-73 lead with a little under a minute left in the game.
 
Calvin Otiono made a lay-up and a free throw to cut the deficit to 79-76 with 36 seconds left, but the Gators could not take advantage of several miscues by the Pioneers. Kindred drained a free throw with four seconds to go to secure the 80-76 win.
 
Besides Whitfield's 15 points, Kindred added 13 points and Turner chipped in 11 points for the Pioneers.  Ota Okungbowa added 10 points for the visitors, who snapped a 7-game losing streak to the Gators.
 
Otiono and Demmin added 12 points each for SF State and Robbie Herndon chipped in 10 points.
 
SF State will host Cal St. Monterey Bay tomorrow evening at 7:30pm at The Swamp.  The Otters lost 92-77 at Sonoma State this evening.
