SF State Falls in CCAA Opener, 67-50 to Chico State

SAN FRANCISCO –  The visiting Chico State Wildcats (5-1, 1-1 CCAA) held the SF State Gators to just 35% shooting from the field and out-rebounded the Gators 41-23 to key their 67-50 road conference victory over their hosts this evening at the Swamp.  Will Overton, Jr. paced the Gator with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
 
"Chico State dominated us on the glass and won every loose ball this evening," said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  "We need to raise our level of play when we battle with the elite teams in this league." "It's still early and we still have a lot of time to fix it."  "I would like to thanks the fans for coming out this evening for a great atmosphere."   
 
The Wildcats held the Gators to 36% shooting from the field including just 19% from three-point land.  Giordano Estrada led the visitors with 15 points and was one of four players in double digits for the Wildcats.  Jordan Semple had 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Chico State.
 
Besides Overton's 18 points, Nefi Perdomo added 14 points for the Gators (2-2, 0-1 CCAA).
 
SF State jumped to a 10-4 lead on a three by Overton in the first three minutes of the game. 
 
Amir Carraway's three capped a 8-2 run by the Wildcats as they cut the Gator lead to 12-10.
 
SF State increased its lead to 17-12 in the next six minutes to take a 17-12 lead on a three by Overton, but the visitors went on a 8-0 run to take a 20-17 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. 
 
Carraway's two free throws ended the half giving the Wildcats a 33-27 lead heading into the locker room.
 
Chico State outscored its hosts 12-4 in the first six minutes of the second half as the visitors took a 45-31 lead. 
 
The Wildcats increased teir lead to 56-40 on a lay-up by Jordan Barton at the 6:45 mark of the second half.
 
SF State cut the deficit to 57-45 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Perdomo with 6:09 on the clock, but that is the closest the hosts would get as Chico State increased its lead to 65-45 with 2:45 to go in the game.
 
Chico State went on to the 67-50 road conference victory.
 
SF State will return home tomorrow evening at 7:30pm, when the Gators host Cal State Stanislaus at The Swamp.  The Warriors defeated Sonoma State 67-61 behind Tyler Barber's 16 points this evening in Rohnert Park.
