Box Score SAN FRANCISCO--- One minute into the sudden overtime period, it was SF State's
Justine Hernandez connecting on a breakaway goal which she kicked the ball into the upper right of the net for the Gators' 1-0 regular season home opener victory over the visiting Northwest Nazarene Crusaders. This was Hernandez's first golden goal as a Gator.
"This was a great win to open up the season with," said SF State head coach
Jack Hyde. "It took a while to execute our plan especially the front runners," added Hyde. "Our game-winning goal was executed correctly."
Allison Land recorded her first shutout as a Gator with four saves in goal for the hosts.
"(Allison) Land and Mariela Holquin played a pivotal role for us in the back for us this afternoon, which was key to us getting the victory," noted Hyde.
The first half saw just 7 total shot attempts by both teams including just three on goal including two by the Gators.
Graceann Rettig saw her chance to put the hosts on top hit the crossbar in the 10
th minute of the half.
Northwest Nazarene (0-1) had a chance to take the lead, but Land made one of her four saves stopping Kayla Williams' attempt in the 21
st minute. Land made another save in the 36
th minute as she stopped one of Kelsey Martin's six shot attempts.
SF State had another chance late in the late to take the lead sail wide right off the foot of
Lauren Floro.
In the second half, the Crusaders' defense held the hosts without a shot on goal attempt while they had three themselves including one with three minutes left being stopped by Land to send the match into the extra period.
The Gators made most of the only shot attempt in the overtime period count as Hernandez connected on the breakaway for the golden goal.
SF State will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 11
th when they host Western Oregon in the Gators' second and final non-conference match of the season. The match is scheduled to start at 4pm at Cox Stadium.
